These stories make me proud to work in science, and sad for the future. For every shiny big facility and high-profile research program, there's thousands of unsung scientists working tirelessly on a subject they're deeply passionate about (with a research budget of < $15,000) 🧪 wapo.st/4n9dpVn
Excited to share our paper in @pnas.org with Aldo Compagnoni and Tom Miller !
Climate change may push dioecious plants toward female-biased sex ratios which will impair seed production. Ignoring this feedback underestimates range shifts. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Visual abstract: “we test hypotheses about floral diversity with community science data and an advanced computer vision model. Red/orange flowers have delayed flowering that matches hummingbird migratory patterns”
Hot off the presses and so so thrilled. Thanks to @inaturalist.bsky.social + computer vision we found something beautifully simple: Red and orange flowers bloom later than all the other colors in the eastern United States. Paper here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1kwzh3QW8S...
With spring arriving, it's tempting to begin working on our yards and gardens. But hold on!
Clearing debris & trimming plants too soon can actually harm bees, butterflies, & other important pollinators!

From ‘Envy, inequality and fertility’ to ‘Market size, trade and productivity’, using catchy three-part phrases in the titles of research papers can boost their citations, suggests a study.

A patch of white crocus flowers, three flowers are prominently shown in the front. They have large white petals and yellow anthers.
Our Observation of the Day is this patch of Crocus heuffelianus flowers (Heuffelov šafran in Croatian), seen in Croatia by mario81140!

Start the day with a visual story and beautiful photos from Heather Holm about bees that collect pollen from just a few native plants. storymaps.com/stories/077b...
A pair of fuzzy orange mock oyster mushrooms grow on the side of a burnt log, its charred wood provides lots of little crevices to emerge from. All photos by me
Here are some nice mushrooms
Science is necessary, but clearly not sufficient, for conveying the climate crisis

Rest is not “doing nothing.” Rest is literally how your body repairs itself. You wouldn’t yell at your phone for needing to be plugged in. You are allowed to recharge your existence.
I loooove @inaturalist.bsky.social and this is a big reason why. They’re instrumental in research and it’s so fun to know that when you go on the app you’re contributing to this knowledge base.
