Your friends who go and see movies with you love you. And if they don't want to have these kinds of connecting moments, then it can be hurtful. But we do have to trust that friends that care about us, probably care about the difference in opinion too. There's no harm in being curious.

And a disagreement might even be too big a descriptor. It's art, you liked it they didn't - but there's reasons for that difference in opinion and figuring out why it's there means learning about each other. I think we often forget that connection goes deeper than hanging out.

Figuring out what those differences are belies connecting more with that person. If someone finds a thing you love boring, then be curious what parts of them don't like it, but also what parts of you do like it. Its something you can't really investigate without someone disagreeing with you.

When you're met with thought terminating cliches you learn about the other person's taste in art - the ideas they find interesting, the expression of ideas they find interesting. If someone finds something boring/don't like it - it begs the question about what values you share, and which you don't.

When we express ourselves and trust that those around us care about why we feel the way we do, we find easier ways to communicate the why. Why is a hard question, easier to explore together with those who are curious about you. This does require we return the favor and be curious about them.

If you express what you feel to the people who care, then they have the opportunity to be curious about why you feel that way. Trust that they care to be curious when you share what you feel and then even if you don’t have the words to explain why, the other person now has the reason to explore why.
