I’m actually talking about VAT (or IVA as it is in Italy) which is 10% on restaurant meals. But unlike the US it’s built into the price, not added on at the end. So if a pasta dish is listed as €10 on the menu, that will include the IVA.

There is tax, it’s just that it’s included in the prices, not added on later so the prices you see are the prices you pay. But yes, it’s very possible to earn very well in Italy for not much money!

"Magataotao" on Twitter writes: "I am Catholic. This👇is not my Pope."

Attached is a video of the Pope saying that we should search for peace and reject war.

A community note under their tweet says: "You are not a Catholic if you do not accept the Pope, but rather a schismatic.

Canon 751: “Schism is the refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff,” ie. the Pope.

Politics has unexpectedly hit a special interest of mine so here is a quick rundown on the Avignon Papacy.

Can’t believe we’re going to have an Antipope in my lifetime!

This weekend we stayed with my mum and she said she’d decided to turn the heating *down* to 20C overnight, and did we think that would be warm enough?

My father in law regularly has the heating on at 25 plus when we go to his. Both of these people live alone in their erstwhile family homes.

Fun fact about the IOC's one time only, all or nothing, SRY gene test 'to identify men'. It's entirely possible to test positive after being pregnant with a boy. Fetal DNA can cross the placental barrier and linger in the maternal bloodstream for decades.

Have you seen Molly Naylor’s poem on this subject? It is perfect.

Re: my last reposts

“Do not put money in the pocket of a woman who has sworn publicly to use it to disenfranchise vulnerable populations” is the smallest ask imaginable. It’s not oxygen, it’s not food. It’s television. You can do without. There are thousands of other shows for you to watch.

I bet Trump and Hegseth don’t know this though. I think they believe you can play a bit at war, then walk away from the game if you start losing.

I’ve been there when it’s like that and it’s horrible but often it’s just people turning up crazy early! They’re pretty good at prioritising people based on whose flight leaves first so you’ll get through. Treat yourself to some lounge time when you get through security!

My partner - who is the same age as me, went to the same university as me, and was part of the same friendship group - just told me he has ‘never seen this video in his life’ and I feel like I’m living with an ALIEN

My mum lives in a semi-rural village in West Yorkshire and her neighbour popped round tonight with iftar leftovers. These kindnesses are everywhere.

I would add to this: padded shorts/underpants if you’re starting out or restarting after a while out of the saddle! Game changer.

At the rugby league match last weekend in the US, when asked to stand for the US national anthem, the British fans started booing, then chanted over it. RL fanbase is mostly white, northern, working class - exactly the base Farage claims to be playing to. They don’t like Trump’s America!

Reminded once again that coming second in a first past the post system is essentially the same as coming last, ie, you lost. And the Green Party won convincingly!

Colman is talking about a film featuring a non-binary lead character, so she’s probably right here. But also it would be verrrrry Hollywood for studios to watch the success of Heated Rivalry and conclude that the people want more films about…sport

Hahaha I miscounted and I actually only have one, don’t I?

BUT Genghis Khan couldn’t read or write and he destroyed so much civilisation that he caused the climate to shift, so I think I can destroy civilisations even if I can’t count…

Today is the first day of Ramadan, the first day of Adar, Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras.

This means that for one reason or another, the majority of humans on the planet have a reason to eat fried food, and that is beautiful.
