Biological sex does not mean "the thing we assume you are based on your genitals observed at birth." It's mostly a misnomer, but insofar as it describes anything real at all, it's a collection of biological attributes, many of which can be changed with HRT. It's neither binary nor immutable.

As I return to my sports writing practice, I'm confronting the total capture of the internet, how hard it is to create spaces for real conversation. I used to love engaging people (in, like, 2009). But there is so much slop & garbage out there, you drown in it before you can connect w/ anyone.

Sonja Erikainen's book Sex Verification & the Making of the Female Body in Sport makes a really important observation: social media has been a major, major force in the attack on trans & intersex athletes. It's really hard to imagine the normalization of psychotic discourse w/o it.

My favorite trolling so far is from someone for whom the fact that a man (a biologist) published a critique of the IOC's sex tests was evidence of the conspiratorial notion that men are taking over women's sport.

Blocking since I posted a link to an article about why it's wrong to test women athletes as the IOC has promised to do. I have about 1400 followers, do not post THAT often. The aggression w/ which you'd have to be looking for anyone trying to raise awareness to troll me...

I am trying to write about these things but get pulled in so many directions of rage, I really respect people who can hit all the points!!
