Cf. the Bezos Post, "Republicans gerrymandering in Texas is fine, actually" b/w "Democrats gerrymandering in Virginia is a threat to democracy"

Congratulations, Virginia! Republicans are trying to tilt the midterm elections in their favor, but they haven’t done it yet. Thanks for showing us what it looks like to stand up for our democracy and fight back.

So much false equivalence in media on gerrymandering in Texas vs California & Virginia. California and Virginia maps approved by the voters. That's a huge difference not enough people pointing out

A Year After U.S.A.I.D.’s Death, Fired Workers Find Few Jobs and Much Loss

This is so sad. “Nights are the hardest.

“I can’t sleep because of our own situation,” Ms. Uccello, 49, said over coffee on a recent afternoon. “I can’t sleep because of what I know what’s happening around the world. I can’t sleep because my former colleagues and friends are also suffering.”

I love it when people develop comprehensive diagnosis out of anecdote:
Brooks and soppressata
Friedman and the cab driver
Haidt and college women talking about sex

One time my sons didn’t answer my texts and I see the collapse of filial piety

British universities paid security firm to ‘spy’ on pro-Palestine students Investigation reveals how Horus, a company led by ex-military intelligence officials, was hired during protest movement.

As a thought experiment, imagine what the reaction would be if universities paid a security firm to monitor “gender critical” groups. The “free speech czar” Arif Ahmed would be all over it and Toby Young would be issuing press releases

Getting a PhD and then working outside academia is dope. My advisees who’ve done that are more or less uniformly happy and feel that they’re using the skills they trained on. (I talked to one today who just landed a great gig). Just wanted to convey that to anyone it might benefit.
