ABSTRACT

Spreadsheets are widely used software tools for data entry, storage, analysis, and visualization. Focusing on the data entry and storage aspects, this article offers practical recommendations for organizing spreadsheet data to reduce errors and ease later analyses. The basic principles are: be consistent, write dates like YYYY-MM-DD, do not leave any cells empty, put just one thing in a cell, organize the data as a single rectangle (with subjects as rows and variables as columns, and with a single header row), create a data dictionary, do not include calculations in the raw data files, do not use font color or highlighting as data, choose good names for things, make backups, use data validation to avoid data entry errors, and save the data in plain text files.

A nice thread highlighting key findings from our new paper estimating parameters of #HPAI in subsequent outbreaks in common terns. We developed a Bayesian inference approach to infer parameters from just carcass counts. #seabirds #statisticalecology #diseaseecology

Mosquitoes in Scotland as far north as Shetland The extent of Scotland's mosquito population is being understood thanks to a successful citizen science project.

Delighted to have BBC feature our citizen science mosquito reporting project. Huge thx to members of the public who have got in touch since last year with sightings from all across Scotland. Great if we can keep it going this summer: report at www.mosquito-scotland.com

Thanks Steven, I'll share the BBC sounds link when I have it. If you can convince your tv you are in Scotland then the pre-recorded section will be on the 7 oclock news tonight.

I'm going to be on BBC Scotland lunchtime live and the 7 oclock news talking about vector-borne disease risk in Scotland. Fingers crossed all goes well. Going to require a serious caffeine hit after a few relatively sleepless nights since baby #2 arrived on Sunday!

Yeah, I'm perfectly happy to use loops 90% of the time but I fully intend to batter this bit of code into the ground so the loops just aren't cutting it.
