Back in 2021 I spent a few months of a predoc RAship refactoring stata code into R code. It would be trivial to do this now with current ai tools but doing it with stackoverflow was a formative learning experience.

Alignment Whack-a-Mole : Finetuning Activates Verbatim Recall of Copyrighted Books in Large Language Models Frontier LLM companies have repeatedly assured courts and regulators that their models do not store copies of training data. They further rely on safety alignme

Whoa. "[F]inetuning exclusively on Haruki Murakami's novels unlocks verbatim recall of copyrighted books from over 30 unrelated authors...Our findings offer compelling evidence that model weights store copies of copyrighted works."

Applying machine learning to identify unrecognized COVID-19 deaths recorded as other causes of death in the United States A machine learning approach suggests that COVID-19 deaths were undercounted unevenly across sociodemographic groups in 2020–2021.

In a new study out in Science Advances, we estimated that 19% more COVID-19 deaths than those officially reported occurred in the United States between March 2020 and December 2021.

What are your thoughts @eugeniopaglino.bsky.social ?

4 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

Really interesting distinction. Authors use gold standard in-patient records to train a classification model, predict on out-patient data, and find more COVID deaths than officially reported. I think "predict" correctly describes their mechanism, while "estimate" correctly describes their conclusion

Yea their methods definitely prioritize avoiding false positives. this was a pretty high bar for flagging dishonesty and there were still so many
