I keep a file in my outlook titled Morale Boost. I stash away emails from colleagues and students that remind me that I have done some good. These are hard times for lots and lots of reasons. I highly recommend doing the same and visiting that folder frequently.

I think with the dissertation and first book, many folks are still lacking confidence and go to "cite all the things" mode. And as you allude to, after all those years you spend writing the dissertation, it's hard to break out of that style!

It's not a Roman fucking salute bc there's no clear evidence that any Roman ever did it. It's a Nazi salute, invented--like the Nazi movement--by modern Europeans fantasizing a glorious past that never was.
