part of what drew me to analyze Number 6 is that I was so stymied by the notion of having no internal sense of self. that's so hard to picture. for me my self was always concrete and it was a gelatinous substance, leaking out and getting stuck on things, and I had to work so hard to preserve it

what you need to understand is that it's possible. it is possible to believe that some kind of insane external action has to be taken to existentially guarantee that you were ever here

I spent several years being very intentionally about kicking rocks and making little marks on things to prove that I existed, genuinely entrenched in some kind of OCD situation about how to existentially guarantee that I was here. I do not relate to Number 6 much but dear god I'm equipped to analyze

[Vigs manga spoilers] what I need people to understand is that what "Number 6" believes about the way that the world operates IS as cartoonish as it's laid out to be. He believes all of that. He literally thinks that's how the world works. It's not overstated for anime purposes.

[Vigs manga spoilers] it's the same playbook as taking something Tomura is feeling and explaining that it's his innate urge to destroy. but in Rock's case it's not just shifting interpretation of himself, it's shifting interpretations of what is real in the universe and how the world works

[Vigs manga spoilers] much like many characters, what Rock is actually experiencing is not the thing he's a metaphor for. what Rock is experiencing is cult-like indoctrination and a way he genuinely believes the world and personhood to magically function

[Vigs manga spoilers] and when I need to explain to people who don't watch the show how he can possibly believe that. god. it's a fantasy world. he's emotionally stunted and extremely selfish and that's all true but he's also doing it in a fantasy world with life-or-death stakes that are nonsense

[Vigs manga spoilers] He BELIEVES it. He believes it. He believes it. Experiment #6 was created in a lab and so he genuinely thinks the personhood hasn't been installed yet and that they can't do that for him, he has to source it himself

[Vigs manga spoilers] (this is not a new thought at all—in fact it's why I resisted the moniker for so long, a lot of us did—I'm just. the internal experience of all that is doing something palpably unfamiliar to my insides I didn't think I had new reactions left about this but no there's more)

[Vigs manga spoilers] like oh god it's disgusting in there. I hold my silence but oh my god it's bad. using Number 6 as a moniker the way we're kind of forced to in character-limited conversations about him really pulls away from the experience he is actually having

[Vigs manga spoilers sort of] getting angry from somehow as-if-fresh-all-over-again angles about the sheer level of indoctrination going on in the identity "experiment number 6." like oh jesus christ the longer I explain him to my partners the more layers of separation from reality we're talking
