my sister recently found this out the hard way. on a self-checkout purchase of $280, she forgot to scan one $18 item. they illegally detained her, accused her of stealing every item she'd purchased. she wasn't allowed to leave until she signed a paper admitting to the theft, or they'd call the cops.
