When I first watched the show when I was younger I hated Locke, I thought he was stubborn and annoying. During the rewatch and really understanding how profoundly lonely he was written to be changed my entire perspective.

Haven’t listened to this yet but rewatching this a few years ago truly made me believe it’s one of the greatest shows ever made. Including the ending.

We were auditioning drummers today and we had this one guy come in, I think he said he wanted to be called Dr. Worm (but he’s not a real doctor…?) and anyway he just sucked. Absolutely ass at the drums. He showed us what he knew and I don’t think he can ever get better at drums. Ugh.

The comics was a breezy read luckily. I finished it in one lunch which surprised me. I will say I laud it for not overstaying its welcome. This comic which should be a forgotten note will now live as a touch point for Wolverine forever. Whatever. Fuck Mark Millar.

These subversions just don’t work. They seem to want to twist what we think of characters but the twist isn’t serving a purpose. This can be fine in comics, a mindless romp is fun. OML so badly wants to have a point and it fails to serve that at every step.

We are introduced to Peter Parker’s granddaughter (who is also Hawkeyes daughter) which is an entirely bizarre can of worms seemingly just to show a young women in sexy poses in a Spider-Man costume. This is one of many characters thrown at us during this run seemingly to subvert our expectations.

Millar has had a strange conviction regarding Hulk as a sex crazed cannibal demon that isn’t really present in other Hulk works. A trend he started in Ultimates and for some reason continues here. The hillbilly hulk clan serves as nothing more than crass gore fodder for the series.

I will give Millar some credit, Logan himself works. The tragedy seems appropriate to enable to behavior we are presented with and it holds consistent to Wolverine as an ethos. Everything else is just a slop fest.

Now I don’t know what is “fixed” or addressed in later iterations of this universe or story but as this was intended as a self contained work those don’t really matter to me. Hawkeye holds little characterization with his 616 self, same with many of the villains they meet.

OML continues a trend Millar likes to follow when writing characters he doesn’t create. “Who cares how they act this is how I want them to act”. This is a huge criticism of Civil War and is actively present in OML.

Before I deconstruct that let me just clarify my original post. I don’t like Millar. His comics are edge slopped poised with some pseudo intellectual bullshit regarding what they represent. The Ultimates, Civil War, Kick-Ass, etc. Boring and disgusting.
