In the 1850s, there were around 20 millionaires in the U.S. But with industrialization, monopolies, virtually no regulation, widespread corruption, by the end of the 1890s total millionaires in the US were over 4,000.
I encourage everyone to watch the movie “The Railway Men” on Netflix. It is a dramatization of the events of the day that Union Carbide released methyl isocyanate into the city of Bhopal India. 4000 killed and half a million exposed.

Yesterday we had the privilege of co-hosting (with Gramercy Books) a conversation between Minor Leader of the House Hakeem Jeffries and Professor Hasan Jeffries at the Ohio Union. It was a full house as Jeffries spoke about his children's book, "The ABCs of Democracy," and his life in politics.
There is no greater insult today in American #politics than to call someone an "elite." No one has hurled that insult more than Donald Trump. Americans have long been suspicious of “elites” but, as historian Steven Conn describes, just who they are has changed a lot over the last 200 years.
