“The decadence of a culture or civilization…will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth” jesus christ well that’s the problem right there

Am never not astounded by the guys getting freaked out about the stuff they're making potentially wiping out human civilization. If you think it's a demonic force then stop building it

A billionaire can get what they want with one donation to a political party. The rest of us must fight for years to get even the most basic rights recognised. Money destroys democracy, more than any other cause. The first step towards a better world is to stop the rich buying political outcomes.

I only made it through the first 20 mins! Found it horribly abrasive and unpleasant. And did not detect any jokes, though maybe it gets funny later on

My metered water bill (2 people living in small 2 bd cottage) is currently ~£130 a month. We don’t have an indoor swimming pool or something -- just 1 shower a day each, washing up, etc. The idea of it going up more is completely absurd

How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.

A study of social media content 18-24-year olds see in #Finland, #France and #Romania shows that algorithms overwhelmingly feed them right-wing political content - whether or not the users are interested.

Three country average for right wing content was 58% - in Finland, 67%!

Netflix Backs Out of Bid for Warner Bros., Paving Way for an Ellison Takeover

The richest man owns X.

The second and third richest men control Google.

The fourth richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fifth richest man owns The Washington Post.

And now the sixth richest could soon take over both Paramount and Warner Bros.

See the problem here?

Good morning.

If you've just woken up, the politics of hope just crushed the politics of fear and hatred (Labour-Reform).

It wasn't even close.

40.6% for the Greens. Reform second on 28.7%, Labour third on 25.4%.

1 month ago 2026 365 48 35

This is a big deal! If Reform can replace the Tories, Greens can replace Labour—and beat Reform.

The Q is will we learn the right lesson from this, which is: unite behind Greens now if we want any chance of beating Reform. The story must not be about Labour’s failure but about the Greens’ success.

The danger w abundance is people hearing “affordable housing” and thinking it’s a progressive movement. So abundance allying itself with tech billionaires is probably a good thing bc it more transparently shows people that its just another neoliberal agenda perpetuated by the capitalist elite 🙃

Broadly speaking, there are 2 political factions. Not Labour v Tory/Reform, Republicans v Democrats etc, but an economic elite, operating globally, versus all of us. Though they are small in number, through the power of the political, media and social media systems they control, they keep winning.

IF YOU'RE UNEMPLOYED IT'S NOT BECAUSE THERE ISNT ANY WORK
JUST LOOK AROUND: A HOUSING SHORTAGE, CRIME, POLLUTION; WE NEED BETTER SCHOOLS AND PARKS.
WHATEVER OUR NEEDS, THEY ALL REQUIRE WORK.
AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE UNSATISFIED NEEDS, THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE.
SO ASK YOURSELE, WHAT KIND OF WORLD HAS WORK BUT NO JOBS. IT'S A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NOT RELATED TO SATISFYING OUR NEEDS, WORLD WHERE WORK IS ONLY RELATED TO SATISFYING THE PROFIT NEEDS OF BUSINESS.
THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT BUILT BY THE HUGE CORPORATIONS OR GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES.
IT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WORK. AND, IT IS WORKING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD CONTROL THE WORK TO BE DONE. YET, AS LONG AS EMPLOYMENT IS TIED TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROFITS, THE WORK WONT GET DONE.

I came across this "critique" of degrowth today in Catalyst magazine, by two prominent writers. I was struck by how wildly incorrect it is.

This is the shit that happens when capitalists delude themselves into thinking that vital environmental regulations are the reason we can’t have nice things.

As long as production is a product of the growth imperative we will only ever get what’s profitable for rich people instead of what’s needed

What even is the point he is trying to make? Yes, the totally superfluous thing I’m building uses a lot of energy but so do things that are completely non superfluous?? What kind of argument is that

It's rare to see how lobbyists operate. But the Epstein-Mandelson correspondence shows us what happens all the time: plutocrats and government ministers conspiring against the public interest. This is why all lobbying should be in the public domain, but despite Labour and Con promises, it's not. 🧵

Bilbo looking at his phone top

on bottom is ChatGPT

After all, why not? Why shouldn't I keep it?

You're absolutely right — you found it, it's been with you a long while, and it's only natural to feel fond of something that's served you so well, especially when someone like Gandalf suddenly seems to want it for himself.

This is excellent political messaging. @zackpolanski.bsky.social hits straight to the core of the problem. This system is intolerable and it must be overcome: production should be organized around human well-being and ecology, not around maximizing profits for the rich.
