Spent about an hour on this to keep up the artistic habit. Simple idea, rough execution, could certainly be better but it was fun to play around with.

The past week has been very busy. Lots of focus on writing, as well as "life", as it always is. It's amusing how artists always just sum it up with that phrase, yeah? "Life got in the way". Why aren't we honest about these things? I was helping someone I care about with very troubling family issues. The ones I care for took priority over work.

More people should listen to Pink Floyd. Maybe we all could learn a thing or two from history, especially as we agree that the modern world is a piece of shit that will clearly only get worse. We all just look for someone to blame instead of ourselves.

working out character design things for tavi in the comic
I figure as you go through life, the way you present yourself says a lot about where you are and how you feel about yourself and the world around you
what do these tavis say to you?

Thank you to the one who commissioned this. It is not often that someone pays you to create that which you'd be creating if not for needing to do commissions. It truly means a lot to receive such selfless patronage, and I hope to do that generosity justice.

Symphony Song.

A name few may recognize. She's an earth pony mare. She plays a stringed instrument and stands on her hind legs. She wears a bowtie. But Octavia was first. Maybe Octavia had a better design, or a more striking instrument, or more screentime, sooner. Whatever the case, there are many musical ponies who have no one to appreciate them, because they were simply too late to grace our imaginations.

I've wanted to do this character more justice ever since learning of her, and reading an overlooked fanfic that stars her. "Shattered", by Zeck, if you're curious. I have more I wish to do with her in the future, in my comic and such, but I never felt I could afford the time to just draw her for my own purposes. Thankfully, a commissioner came along with the prompt: "Surprise me. Literally anything."

And so, I have been paid to draw something I wish I could have drawn anyway, and I think that has made a big difference. It's not perfect, but I am quite proud of this.

Two ponies cozily watching a laptop together.

This one was my first attempt at something of a "true lineless" process, I still use some lines, but for the most part they were avoided beyond the sketch stage. Certainly looks more professional than my usual work, and it was quite interesting to play around with. I don't think I'll do lineless all the time, as I quite like the flavor my linework adds, but it's a nice skillset to have, and I can probably incorporate some of the techniques into my usual process.

A bat pony and a changeling walk into a bar.

More experimentation with the process. First time I've ever tried to render drinks or pool tables, as well. Maybe not the most inspired or emotional piece I've ever done, but I'd like to think it's a bit more technically competent than my average work, and I think it makes a good story piece.

A feral-looking Octavia lunges forth, stopped only by Vinyl's magic holding up a broken chair leg. Fangs are bared and blood is splattered, remnants of a former meal. A moment in time from a story that the commissioner is developing, one that I wanted to do justice for maybe obvious reasons.

This piece was rather challenging and experimental, despite my interest in its subject matter. I've been generally struggling with the reality that my technical skill is not as strong as it could be, and I've been trying out different processes and mindsets when making art. I'm not 100% satisfied with my new process just yet, but this is a step above my other recent experiments, I believe.

I wonder if it's bad for business for artists to be honest about their struggles with the process. But frankly, the only people who matter are the ones who care about honesty.

Octavia standing up with cello in hoof, facing blinding lights and a faceless audience.

This was specifically requested in reference to that one picture that went viral recently. I did my best to retain similar structure and energy to the original picture, but at the same time, I was also juggling the feel of the image as it was being drawn, and having to make compromises due to pony anatomy not translating perfectly from human anatomy. So in this sense, this piece is obviously referencing the original pic, but it has also veered in its own direction. I hope that I was able to do the original justice, but also that the blend was smooth and this piece brings something worthwhile in its own right.

Rainbow Dash snowboarding. Tried a bit of a funky POV/pose here, trying to maximize "coolness" points. Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't.

How can such a lively city be so lonely?

Fun messing with lighting effects on this one, especially with the sort of "light fog" between buildings.

A changeling detective caught in a difficult position. A last stand? Or just another day on the job?

Fun with perspective this time around. Guns are a lot easier to draw when you use perspective boxes.

In the office of a very imposing dracony.

Had a weird time with the perspective and lighting in this one. I wanted to make him look very "draconic", which I think I managed?

A snowy landscape, with the sun below the horizon, but still lighting the world. There are snow mares frolicking. One has its eyes on you!

With this one, I tried something new: doing the background first. Had a fun chat with some new people while I was working on it, and we were musing about how the snow mares are one of the purest parts of the "new fandom". They live good lives alongside nature, lives that we can only dream of in our times.

Otherwise... Cute!

Thank you. It's really hard to figure out a word for it, huh? Longing is a good word, I think.

Alyss in a red dress, singing as she gazes into the distance.

I tried a few new ideas when rendering this one. An overall simpler approach, but I think the experimentation still paid off.

The main thing that struck me as interesting when making this was how "frontloaded" the year was. I had many, many options to pick from for the first few months. But around April is when I was doomed to work retail, and for the majority of February-October, I was directing most of my creative effort towards Since We Last Spoke. That video alone could represent my year. Funnily enough, December is the only month after the first few where I had to seriously consider which piece was my "favorite". Most other months were shoe-ins. July felt particularly empty.

Still, fascinating to see patterns in output. I'm only becoming more and more certain that I need to quit my day job and do art full-time, but that's tough when so few people are willing to support selflessly. I'm hoping to grow my SubscribeStar this year, so that I can maybe, just maybe, get more big projects underway. Less doodles, more stuff on the level of Since We Last Spoke, as disappointing as that one's performance was.

Decided I'd try making one of these, and it was actually pretty interesting to do. Too many thoughts to fit in this character limit though, so check the Alt Text thingie if you care about artist thoughts about their own art.

Octavia laying on a bed, face-down, presenting herself. She is covering herself.

This is a piece I created for myself some time ago. I always considered this one to be more artistic in nature. And for that reason, it belongs on this account. When I eventually put my story to paper, I intend to explore sexual themes. This could be considered a warning of that intent.
