NOAA GOES 18 weather satellite’s Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) instrument detected the atmospheric re-entry of NASA’s Artemis II Orion capsule over the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and southern California just before 23:56 GMT — too cool! #ArtemisII #NASA #NOAA
Imagine being in space 30 min ago and now you’re about an hour from In n Out
Things that work: giant rocket, very precise math, orbital mechanics, cameras, iPhones
Things that don’t work: Microsoft Outlook, toilets, sat phones
Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school.
Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon!
🌕 💛
Here is another one where two distinct branches behaved quite differently. I suspect it might be due to the spatial orientation of the leader charge following the triggering leader development. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuAU...
Bright meteor/bolide west of Rapid City, SD at 8:24 pm MDT last evening (Apr 8th) captured by 2 observatory cameras. Double bright flashes prior to decay. youtu.be/LFEKBz_paIc
There are 4 astronauts on the other side of the Moon right now unable to contact or hear anything from Earth. They are the luckiest people in the universe.
New post about the most spectacular upward lightning flash I have witnessed and what you can see in the 9 min long high-speed recording of the 0.6 second flash.

What A Blast! 906pm on Thursday over Chicago. All that lightning in one moment...this is one image.
2 minutes of Oklahoma Lightning Mapping Array data with one flash (shown in pink dots) extending a couple of countries east of the rest of the lightning activity.
I do appreciate a good rumble before the heaviest of the precip reaches the area
There are now 10 toilets in Space
International Space Station: 4
Crew Dragon Docked at ISS: 1
Soyuz Docked at ISS: 1
Tiangong Space Station: 2
Shenzhou Docked at TSS: 1
Artemis II on way around Moon: 1
This will be the first time a toilet has left low earth orbit!
The Canary Islands enveloped in dust as waves and vortices swirl off of them.
A fascinating, complex view.
An 800+ mile long haboob sweeping across northwest Africa.
My oh my...
I have created a video lecture series called Understanding Lightning. It is a 9 part series using high-speed video, animations and electromagnetic data plots to explain lightning physical processes. No AI, just a simple lecture format. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id_U...
Another great video from Greg Leyh. This shows why most high-voltage labs don't usually incorporate high current in their tests for safety reasons.

Green and red aurora visible over Wall South Dakota at 1030 pm MT on Mar 20th 2026
Wall, South Dakota Mar 20th 1030 pm MT
I slowed down the lightning initiation video and it’s clearly an upward strike. These ~5 frames taken from a 240fps clip represent about 20 milliseconds in real time. All this with a handheld cameraphone 🤯
Begging physicists to recognise that being brilliant at one thing does not make you an expert on everything.

Thank you all for the hundreds of photo submissions! You can still submit your suspected FAE images to vledvina@alaska.edu for science purposes.
If you want to be more confident that what you captured is indeed an FAE and not proton aurora, see the flier attached here.
This is really cool to watch. Volcano and Tephranado dance. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA9Q...
If you receive an illegal order, you have a duty to disobey.
This isn’t controversial.
A President calling for the execution of anyone who reminds service members of this oath is showing us why the duty to disobey illegal orders is so important in the first place.
