Iāve experienced this at 2 different schools and culture matters more than structure alone. If a principal is rarely in school, not contributing as an equal member of the community, then this is just an efficient form of burning teachers out. But at schools with principals who are truly in it, great

Itās not the genre you may be looking for, but the short story āCatch, Pull, Driveā in the Fresh Ink anthology is helpful for developing empathy by reading from a trans teenās point of view
"For years, a cottage industry of political observers has contorted itself to obscure and occlude the obvious. That regardless of what others see in him, Trumpās entire political career...cannot be understood outside the context of his bitter, deep-seated racism." (gift link)
I didn't know how much I needed this show until I saw it. I'm going to have my youngest nephew watch it with me today.
The White House did a dishonest y-axis so I fixed their y-axis for them, youāre welcome White House

The Birther-in-Chief's disgusting history of racism has its own page on Wikipedia.

I keep coming back to Miller's formulation of sovereignty: "to control a territory you have to be able to defend a territory, improve a territory, inhabit a territory."
Think of how few states actually meet that definition, and how alarmed the rest will be to learn this is the US govt's position.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ā Alberto CastaƱeda Mondragón says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance. But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain. He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friendās car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again. He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.
ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man āpurposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.ā
What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldnāt remember he had a daughter.
Hi - this is lovely and just great of you to share. Question though ā writing rope? Is that referring to the book or something else? Thanks!
As a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Viola Ford Fletcher bravely shared her story so that weād never forget this painful part of our history. Michelle and I are grateful for her lifelong work to advance civil rights, and send our love to her family.
Perfect - thank you again!
Thank you!
Could you recommend readings? I also felt that the piece ran in different directions and didnāt explore any very well. But it did spark my desire to learn more
Sorryā where is this? Itās not widely enough known that people are out there nightly confronting this

As communities come together to take action, protect people's rights, and share critical resources, there's one thing we need to remember: this country was forged by people who were willing to resist.

Is there a Know Your Rights guide specifically for students/schools?
ICE may not respect our rights, but they cannot take away our POWER. Scroll through for resources in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, & English to learn about your rights. SAVE THIS FOR LATER & SHARE FAR & WIDE š£ļø Click here for more resources: www.google.com/url?q=https:...
John Lewis staging a sit-in on the floor of Congress in 2016 in an effort to combat gun violence.
Seeing all these feckless Democrats in Congress flailing and asking "what do you want me to do" and I keep thinking: bare minimum, I want you to have the energy of a 76-year-old John Lewis staging a sit-in on the floor of Congress in opposition to the inaction on gun violence after Pulse. MINIMUM.
We are descending as a society into a dark sea of false and dehumanizing representations of immigrants, as deep in wickedness and lies as it is replete with monsters of our own making. Too many of us would rather drown than swim to the surface and back to the shores of sanity.
In early 2024, we pledged to tell accountability stories with partners in all 50 states over the next five years ā our 50 State Initiative. Weāre currently working with our first 10 local newsrooms and will be selecting another 10 in 2025.

Agreed! I mean there will be public info that can be /is getting shared through networks already doing the work, like immigration lawyers and advocates. Iām wondering how teachersāwho are often the first person kids ask for helpācan connect to that to be more informed and prepare
As a new ESL teacher, I taught with 10 veterans. Sadly they werenāt helpful. Then I joined š¦ and found you! Not only did I feel Iād found a mentorāyou set an example as a teacher who is always ready to share for the benefit of the kids. Iāve tried to do the same. Thank you(Back then I was Ms Flecha)
I already have students with deportation orders, filing for special juvenile asylum, etc. While trying not to panic, my colleagues and I are trying to prepare for the not-unimaginable worst coming. I donāt believe weāre alone in our worries/desire to plan. Are your schools/colleagues discussing?
Thanks for sharing! Been following Larry Ferlazzo since 2011 but on the bird app but hadnāt seen this list!
Iāve been teaching since 2007 but never teach the same texts or with the same purpose. Always depends on the kidsā interests or needs. Itās usually invigorating but this year itās SO exhausting since Iām also creating new routines because I have more SLIFE students
Not only that. Iām currently writing a chapter that describes the ways that, since the 1970s, immigration authorities have done everything they can to DISCOURAGE asking for asylum at ports of entry.
Reason a million our asylum system doesnāt work that has little to do with fraudulent claims.
