I appreciate hockey because ice skating’s hard, and also when they try and fight each other they slip n slide in their big ole clunky equipment and it looks so silly, like toddlers swatting each other while collapsing in slow motion

Some animals can sleep with one eye open! It’s called unihemisphereic slow-wave sleep, where only half the brain rests at a time. We see it in birds & marine mammals like seals!
Seals & dolphins still surface for air while sleeping this way, and birds can even do it while flying! 🦆💤
That man saved my neighbor’s life, the lives of the other boys who heard him that day, and likely many more than just those, too.
Being ordered to do something doesn’t mean you have no choice. It means you have a responsibility to do the right thing regardless.
Regardless.

The man said he wasn’t a soldier by choice. He’d been tortured into it, and lost an eye in the process. He didn’t agree with the orders he was forced to carry out, so he undermined them.
He told the boys to say they were 12 and go stand with their mom or a single woman who’d let them pretend.

Nazi soldiers rounded up a large group and demanded they sort themselves by age. Women and children to one side, men and boys over 13 to the other.
One of the soldiers lagged behind. When he was out of earshot of his fellows, he beckoned the boys nearby. My neighbor was one of them. 2/4
Been reflecting a lot lately and figured I’d share something.
I knew a man, growing up, who survived WW2 as a kid from Poland. He was a neighbor of mine and a kind-hearted soul.
He told us stories of that awful time. The one the stuck with me the most was the last time he saw his father. 🧵 1/4
you’re building out the categories you wanna see more of and that matters though, niche shipping is important too
that’s amoreeeeee 🎶
I’m not typically a big drinker, actually! Just studied horticulture in college and worked in it for a bit, so I have some plant knowledge lodged up in my brain from all that :)

Red wine is made with red or black grapes fermenting along with their skins. White wine is made by fermenting grapes without the skin or pulp.
A rosé is a red wine fermented like a white wine.
A bit oversimplified, but if you ever wondered, that’s the difference! 🍷🥂

I have an entomology joke but it has a tendency to bug people

The smarter the insect, the more organized their social structure! The most complex for buggos is eusociality— where there’s communal caretaking of offspring & a division of labor for the whole.
Eusociality can be seen in bees, termites, wasps, ants, and even some cockroaches! 🐝🐜🪳

This was so much fun to be a part of! Thanks @drgnmusic.bsky.social for making me sound so lovely! 🧡

Some plants don’t photosynthesize— because they don’t have any chlorophyll!
Some parasitics attach to other plants to survive, like mistletoe and squawroot.
Others, like coralroot orchids and pinesap, tap into mycorrhizal fungi networks in the soil for their nutrients instead! 🍄🌾

Whenever a month starts on a Sunday, the 13th lands on a Friday.
Every year has at least one instance of a Friday the 13th! 🍀🧡
There seems to be a lot of discussion about Gavin Newsom today.
I wanted to re-share this piece that I wrote, because I have a lot of center-to-left Dems that follow me that want to understand.
There are very good reasons transgender people do not like Gavin Newsom.
haha just a bunch of one-scene/line characters and general background walla but still, it was a fun one!
ooo I’m in that one
showoffs. we can’t even get WATER to fall from the sky out here in Cali
Oh I was also working at a farm at the time! Always had some kind of nick or scratch or bruise from that, haha
A smiling human looking down at a handful of tarantula, the spider’s legs posed comfortably around the human’s fingers.
A Chilean rose-haired tarantula chilling calmly in a human hand.
Meet Rosie! She was the gentlest tarantula I’ve ever met. Back in college I introduced her to a large number of kids through the entomology department’s insect zoo. She was super popular for a good reason— she was an absolute sweetheart! 🧡🧡🧡
You can always check the label! Because the vanilla orchid has a very specific insect pollinator that doesn’t exist outside of the Americas, most vanilla plants need to be pollinated by hand during a very short window of time. It’s cheaper to synthesize fake vanilla than grow the actual thing!

Vanilla comes from an orchid flower! It’s considered a ‘new world’ spice, native to Mesoamérica where the Aztecs used it to flavor chocolate.
Despite vanilla’s western origins, Madagascar is actually the leading commercial producer of vanilla these days, followed by Indonesia!🍦🧡
Aw heck yeah, plume moths don’t get enough love.
Your art is wonderful!! 🧡

Animals have all sorts of ways to survive cold climates!
Some insects overwinter as eggs, others undergo a hibernation-like state called diapause, red squirrels rely on cached food in middens, Alaskan tree frogs freeze solid and thaw later— nature’s adaptations are pretty varied! 🧡❄️
Little announcement— BIG HOPS IS OUT NOW!! It was such a blast to work on, @luckshotgames.com made a really fun game.
Honored to have been a part of the team! 🧡🦇🦝
