If you're nostalgic for a dead or dying empire maybe keep that shit to yourself instead of making the people whose families somehow survived under that empire read about how bummed you are that the cultural genocide didn't destroy them. Just a thought

It makes me furious that anybody would cry about the death of the largest contiguous empire. I know people who lived through it have complicated feelings about whether or not their specific situation is worse then or now, but that's never who's loudly wishing the cultural genocide had continued.

People sleeping outside on benches and going to the bathroom on the sidewalk are problems of the social safety net failing and it is so much cheaper and easier to just expand the safety net than to punish people who fell through it.

I will die on the hill that cities should have public bathrooms that have 24/7 staffing so the bathrooms remain clean and safe whenever you need one, with a telephone and charging stations. Living in NOLA and smelling piss everywhere has radicalized me. It's a problem that we can fix.

I use it mostly for reading and watching TV, but I do think LingQ is worth the price tag but it's not particularly gamified. Drops is mostly a vocabulary builder that plays like a game. Neither quite hit like pre AI Duolingo but might be good together.

I've always found this interesting because I don't think it's the same thing as "passing out from pain" which to me is a sudden loss of consciousness with no voluntary or preparatory step between states. But that might be a distinction without meaning.

I need to emphasize I'm not sleepy! I can't go take a nap and feel better! (I did try lol) My brain feels the slightest attempt to break through this dissociative inertia and responds to self awareness by trying to shunt my consciousness into the safety of sleep.

Having a genuinely terrible pain day where every time my attention lapses even slightly my brain immediately tries to fall asleep to avoid having physical self awareness. It's not like the pain itself is loud? It's not loud. It's everything else that's at top volume.

I think this is a really great analogy. Even on a mid to bad date with someone who is basically incompatible with you, it is still possible to enjoy oneself or have a deep and meaningful experience. But that's not something they did for you. You did that and they were just kinda there.

Even harsh criticism like "I don't know why these publishers chose to publish this book with these things in it" or even "I do not think anybody should read this book" are different from "this book should be illegal" or "this author should be punished"!

I know people, including myself, have historically settled for "well ... you tried I guess" but it's just so much cognitive work to read or watch a story, I can't ALSO do cognitive dissonance on top of it without LARGE effort.

The brain injury has made me unable to "read around" stuff that showcases a real lack of empathy or, in what is often worse because it's better intended, a lack of relationality, because if they'd had deep connections to a community they would know not to do whatever they just did.

It doesn't have to be a deal breaker for you, you can read around it if you want, but if people had to be maliciously racist to make a space hostile for IBPOC it would be a lot easier to get through life because ignorance and indifference are much more common tbh.

You don't have to defend other people's bad representation. You don't have to make excuses for the author or try to explain away your discomfort with what they wrote. They wrote it and nobody in the publishing process made them remove it. And now you had to read it.

I think it's worth asking the question: "can I trust a writer with these flaws not to take me somewhere horrible if I trust him" and just articulating that question for me often makes me realize I have already extended more grace than I perhaps want to.

Unfortunately I don't think publishing right now is equipped to keep marginalized people safe, especially trans people. I don't think that's our problem to fix, but our thoughts and insights and experiences are really valuable if we ever get to share them.

I guarantee 90% of my followers would write memoirs more entertaining and possibly useful than the stuff being published right now by people who think memoirs are a good PR boost for their brand.

I think English wikipedia's criteria for significance is much higher than the majority of memoirs written by people who once shared crepes with a poet or went grocery shopping for a stressed out ballerina in the USSR, so write your own reminiscences, they're probably important enough for historians.

I don't assume I will ever have an academic citation for this research (though I do have several for my BA and some for my non academic writing) but it is very funny to think of someone going "wait, who?? What??" ten years from now to discover I mostly write queer speculative poetry.

We are asked to CARE that we remember the series transpiring differently than anyone other than the Doctor now does. What does that mean for the emotional weight of that story? I don't think adding material to Endgame asks the viewer to care about the changes.

Say what you will about the last season of Doctor Who and the sudden abandonment of the plot of the entire season, but it did at least EXPLAIN its heavy handed retcon and acknowledge it as a plot device with narrative consequences.
