Drift DJ alpha testing and mixing I finally found sometime after working with the Drift Zero team, to install the latest alpha build. Things have been hectic for a while but one night I got some time to play. It was great, although I didn't really know all the buttons, so I was just working it out by pressing and playing. Its only today I seen…

1 year ago I left BBC R&D, what’s happen since? 1 year ago I officially left the BBC after just short of 21 years. Looking back at the post I wrote about how I had been since August 2024, when I first learned my position was at risk and the one I wrote in March 2025. A heck of a lot has happened in the last year. I now have my own business doing a number of different things, but all still focused on the public space.

Looking back at a tricky year of running a limited business and thinking out loud.

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere @rude1.blacksky.team and/or the #blacksky team talk about blacksky cash? or something about working on monetisation/monetization in #ATproto?

Am I looking under the wrong rug or do I dream it? 😅

Following up from my ULEZ fine – The computer is wrong! I have a follow up to the post about cloning of my scooter licence/number plate. Its been pretty hellish, with everything falling back to the analogue hole aka writing letters by hand to prove who I am with the DVLA. The MET police called me and after verifying they who they said they were, we had a long conversation.

A follow up to the post about cloning of my scooter licence/number plate.

Break Big Tech: Dismantle the root cause of online harms Platforms like X, Facebook and Instagram harvest our personal data so that they can target us with ads. Their platforms are designed to keep us online, pushing out content that will keep us engaged.…

The UK government is stuck treating the symptoms, not the root cause of online harms.

Nothing changes until we break the business model that drives hate and extremism; the harvesting of our data to maximise engagement and fuel advertising.

It's time to #BreakBigTech.

Diabolo tricks on the Fediverse For a long while I have been posting stills from my diabolo sessions on pixelfed. It makes a lot of sense as I was recording at 90 frames/sec making good still images. However I decided its time to just go with video and as I'm quite a fan of peertube for my mixes on my own selfhosted site and…

Dealing with a cloned motorcycle licence plate Today I received a ULEZ fine from Transport for London? Somehow I had broken the rules of the ultra low emission zone. On the day when I was flying over the alps in Europe on a holiday. My scooter hasn't been stolen as I have used it since, plus I have a ton of thick chains and trackers on it (although…

What machine readable wishes could do for your social death? Late last year me and Sam's talk for FOSDEM 2026 was accepted. We shared the slides here but now you can watch the whole video. Death is inevitable, yet most of us are woefully unprepared. Fear and lack of time often prevent us from putting our affairs in any order, leaving our loved ones to pick up the pieces of a difficult period compounded by uncertainty.

What machine readable wishes could do for your social death?

Watch the whole video from FOSDEM 2026 and browse through the slide deck.

The shadow of concrete ruins mix Its been a while since I created a mix on the Pacemaker device, but a recent trip to Budapest gave me some time to try out a few new tunes in a mix. This mix is a real banger, with a lot of really great tunes alongside some classic ones to anchor the mix. Weirdly enough, the mp3 recorder ran out of battery just near the end and I had to recreate the last 3 tunes.

Its been a while since I created a mix on the Pacemaker device, but a recent trip to Budapest gave me some time to try out a few new tunes on the old #pacemakerdevice

I present the Budapest influenced : The shadow of concrete ruins mix.

Age walls could be erected at the government's whim.

New Henry VIII powers would give Ministers the ability to impose age verification across the Internet. And it goes way beyond social media.

We'll have to surrender our ID to unregulated providers for everyday access to information and services.

It's also *deliberately* disingenuous because we did explain AT and Eurosky at great length to their primary funder.

If I were launching a social media about truth and verification I'd, like, try not to lie but that's just me.

Anyway, some of us have work to do.

Digital legacy planning? Recently I was looking around at the space of digital legacy after a conversation with a friend and ahead of a presentation myself and Sam are giving at FOSdem 2026 titled Fedi legacy; next weekend in Brussels. I was quite shocked at some of the products and services including  expensive glorified spreadsheets templates (I won't link to it). Then I came across…

This space is full of "interesting" services and products but nothing like machinereadablewishes.cc from what I can see

Have you seen better?

On March 2, we are going to try something different. Something in addition to the regular twice/year FediForum un-conference (so don't worry).

We will run an un-**workshop**, on a topic that many in the community have told us is very pressing for them:

How do we grow the Open Social Web?

Elon Musk’s X must be banned Regulators need to stop cowering before the richest man in the world

Every day, thousands of women and children are victimized by people on X using the Grok chatbot to generate scantily clad and naked photos of them.

It’s time for governments to take action. Elon Musk’s X should have been banned long ago. They don’t have an excuse to delay any longer.

New podcast: Making the familiar strange Its been a long time in coming but as most people know I'm fascinated about relationships, loneliness and intimacy space. They are at the heart of much of the things I have been working on. From the impact of loneliness to my own experiences with dating in a book I'm writing. Lets also not forget the manifesto I started.
