Gnomestones aspires to combine the worst aspects of each category. We call it ‘the terribly reconstituted pseudo-game’ or TTRPG for short

In the world of Gnomestones there is a logging village called Rulmota. The villagers speak with the Rulmotan accent where all the ‘p’s sound like ‘k’s and the ‘k’s sound like ‘p’s and the ‘b’s and ‘d’s are switched as well.

Try it out! I kromise it pan de fun. 🤩

Can you find the Gnomestones hex?

This was one of my favorite projects of the year. Many thanks to the organizers, especially @bakenshake.bsky.social

Which in turn is a common tool that oppressors use to dismiss emotionally aggrieved protestors under the guise of civility.

And this explains why I’m against over-commodification of TTRPGs, it dilutes humanity in oral tradition.

I’m surprised when grimdark fans are the ones saying ‘it’s not that deep’ and then also saying ‘every play style is valid except hate speech’ which then allows them to define said hate speech,

Yes, pretty much. Since the oral tradition was so important, stories played an important role in shaping relationships with nature. IMO ttrpgs are one of our last modern spaces for group storytelling, and thus vital for playing out morality discussions and creating shared beliefs. We must protect!

So when times were tough, the trolls were easy to defeat, and when good times roll, nostalgia pushes the trolls into a ferocious space. These days things are pretty bleak, so hopecore would make sense, but we also need tales that narratively confront real world villains.

3 months ago 1 0 1 0

What’s interesting to me is the people who like grimdark are often those most in denial about real world problems. I got a minor in folklore and one of my main takeaways is that our folk fiction is often inversely correlated with the amount of real world hardship. (1/2)

I see! I’ve been in Olympia but just moved to Pullman for PhD at WSU.

I’m going to brainstorm and submit an event, thanks for putting this on. Will be cool to finally meet more folks in the community.

I’m going to attend at all costs, you are my favorite creator! May I ask why it’s in Oregon? Close to me but I thought you were in the northeast.

All is free to prep how they’d like. My issue is with bloggers who post articles about ‘foolproof’ hacks. They generate a lot of clicks and allow the blogger to claim intellectual ownership of some facet of game design, but offer little original thought. I’d call the genre ‘commodification core’.

3 months ago 0 0 0 0

Why is everyone so focused on simplifying and streamlining their TTRPG methods these days?

I like going down rabbit holes while prepping. I don’t mind complexity. And I like pluralism in my toolkit of game mechanics, I don’t need a one-size-fits-all solution.
