Important questions! We also reflect on the generalizability of the findings in our article. Yes, the effect of the governmental level may be very different in another context. Think also of countries, such as Belgium and Spain, in which MLG can be more contested...

And 2/ would be an excellent question for further research. Based on our empirical findings, we cannot link to these debates. Crises often act as a catalyst for supranational integration, but there are also concerns about the legitimacy of the EU (and IOs) as a transboundary crisis manager...
... citizens may construct their legitimacy perceptions based on previous crisis experiences and a country’s administrative tradition. We also acknowledge that the Covid-19 memory and retrospective evaluations can play a role in our experimental setting.
Thought-provoking questions! And yes /1 is very important, and the differences between NL and GE also hint into this direction (& this is in line with our ‘institutional hypothesis’)...
3️⃣ There is however some country-specific variation: in the Netherlands, citizens consider restrictive measures as more legitimate when they are decided by the national government, as compared to the regional government, whereas in Germany we find no significant difference.
2️⃣ For the legitimacy of restrictive measures, it matters very little which level of government takes a decision.
Based on a survey experiment with Dutch and German citizens, we show that:
1️⃣ Citizens do consider region-specific crisis interventions as equally legitimate as nation-wide ones

5/6 Als polarisatie toeneemt, kan begrip voor vreedzaam protest afnemen. Hoeveel ruimte gunnen we onze politieke tegenpolen? ⚖️
4/6 Polarisatie doet ertoe voor hoe we vinden dat de overheid met demonstraties moet omgaan. Steun voor vreedzaam protest is groot, maar hangt af van:
✅ Of we het eens zijn met de demonstratie
✅ Of we negatieve gevoelens hebben over de demonstranten
✅ Of demonstranten een meerder- of minderheid zijn
3/6: Toch bestaan er sterke negatieve gevoelens richting specifieke groepen in het debat, vooral rond klimaat, migratie en stikstof. 🌍🛂🚜
2/6 Een paar bevindingen. Allereerst: Zorgen over polarisatie zijn groot, maar de daadwerkelijke (affectieve) polarisatie in NL is relatief beperkt. 📉
