That is If reason is a resonance, a spirit of recognition, which requires two sides. Reason lacking world lacks itself, a world without reason equally so, as it is without order or life, for the spirit invigorates it and has the concept, that is development.

Conversely: If the gaze of reason is only on itself, then the world equally lacks reason. And such reason that remains in total tautology equally lacks itself.

self-consciousness is not the problem, rather the lack of it but understood as objective self, the self of substance. Problematic is vanity, to enclose into ones particularity when facing an unruly world. There is as much reason in the world, as reason sees the world.
