And I could forgive it if it were just me. We’ve closed doors on our relationship years ago. But to not reach out to your sons who are always waiting for you to reach out and grab the hands they already have outstretched? Unforgivable.
For a week, my father has known about my mom’s diagnosis. He has all of our phone numbers. He has not made a single attempt to reach out to any of his children. Our MOTHER has cancer and you can’t send a fucking text message?
Forgiving someone without letting them back into your life is hard. Forgiving someone when they continue to find ways to hurt you even from a distance is harder. One thing I cannot forgive, is someone hurting the people I care about.
When I choose to forgive, I’m doing it for myself. I’m doing it so the hurt and anger I feel doesn’t eat me alive. I’m doing it so that my own heart is at peace. Not because the other person necessarily deserves that forgiveness.
Forgiveness is weird. It’s like, you really do not deserve the kindness I am extending you, but I really hope you get better so that I’m the last person you ever hurt like this.
