Researchers have found a way to use sunlight to break down some common plastics at the chemical level, forming useful compounds like acetic acid, the main ingredient in vinegar.

Plastics linger in the environment and when they do eventually break down, they spread through water (think rivers and oceans and lakes) as tiny microplastics.
