I really love Conqueror of Shamballa. I’m genuinely so happy and so impressed that it exists. It’s a very complicated and bittersweet and strange ending for a boys adventure series, but I love it for the historic context and challenging ideas it brings to the table. It has my whole heart ❤️

I think it’s more just like… okay to be honest I don’t really talk to the friend who said all that anymore, but he was from Kyoto and was a bit stuck up and was very much of the opinion that it wouldn’t be fun because there “was nothing to do” (i.e. spend money)

I knew it too!! Like deep down, obviously, I would want to stay there for longer! But I kept getting told it’s boring because it’s out in the country, and I’m blinded by my otaku-goggles, and I won’t like it as much irl… I should’ve listened to my gut, because I knew better!

You could spend a week up there. Do not risk it, spend as much time as you feel like you might want.

But I should’ve stayed much longer. I had so little rest that trip and I felt so wiped out and physically exhausted. I could barely walk, I missed breakfast, and I had to pack up and check out within an hour, and I just couldn’t take it.

For the record it’s not like I was just sad to leave, but rather I exhausted and overexerted myself… and then, I visit this wonderful, relaxing place, and I only book two nights there. All my Japanese friends kept saying I’d be bored and I shouldn’t stay too long…

This is too vulnerable for me to post on X The Everything App but I had a panic attack when I left Shirakawa-Go. If you ever go, do yourself a favor and give yourself plenty of time there. I had overbooked my trip in general, and it was so nice I genuinely wasn’t ready to leave when the time came.
