Last night I watched a seagull picking at the limp, lifeless body of a small bird with splayed wings.
Its tiny companion came to its defense, flying low and past the seagull’s head, over and over.
Only after half an hour did the little bird give up.
After that it didn’t return.

She’s worked quite furiously on it all spring.
But the cool darkness of storm was stronger.
Today the bird’s nest has fallen from its branch.
A tightly woven basket of a summer unlived.
Tiny chicks unraised.
Is it too late?
What on Earth will she do the rest of the year?

She pulsates, glistens with life.
Slithering across the table on alien arms,
she drags her gravity-plagued body—
A last attempt to escape.
We are her killers.
No one senses tragedy.
