So wild. I had my windows open on Friday and today my heat is back on.

Also "how did you get so smudgy"

Is it a career achievement to have someone in Ontario contact me about a presentation I gave at the 2025 New Hampshire Library Association conference? I've gotten used to Vermont and Maine, but a Toronto suburb is definitely new...

Unclear if current female cat's slow uptake or male cat's smacking is the outlier.

Previous cats:
Female cat would figure out quickly & purr next to my head for hours
Intersex cat would figure out quickly & stay with me until they determined additional help was needed and would run to nearest other human. They would repeat running from that human to me until other human followed.

A comparison of my cats on a day I have a migraine:
Male cat figured it out many hours ago and repeatedly smacked my head.
Female cat has finally realized and is now purring next to my head.

I'm keeping my New York Times and Concord Monitor subscriptions. I'm a sustainer for WAMU, NHPR, and Vermont Public. I've previously dropped the Baltimore Sun (coverage no longer relevant to me), Meduza (which I might pick up again if I drop the Post), and the Guardian.
Advice for a news junkie?

With my favourite sections now decimated and 1/3 of the staff laid off overall, I'm leaning towards cancelling my subscription for the first time. Bezos doesn't need my money, but I do care about newspapers and journalists. 3/

I love(d) the metro section and international coverage, but over the past 18 months have been reading the Post less and less because the coverage has been floundering. My subscription renews in March. 2/

Reaching into the ether in the hopes of current or former @washingtonpost.com staffers somehow see this and can give input.
I've been a subscriber since my first year of university. I grew up in MD but haven't lived there in years. 1/

Ugh. What have they published now?

I decided to be nice to my neighbour and knock down the massive icicles on their porch.
It seems that indeed no good deed goes unpunished because one of the icicles smacked into my pocket and shattered my phone screen.

I testified against this bill in person. I was one of two librarians (and one library trustee) who showed up.
What is sadly an upside to what did pass is that it's only physical the minor currently has out. Prior versions were any/all checkout history.

In August, very early in the morning at a German train station and functioning on no sleep, I sent my dad a message to ask if the US was invading Venezuela because my brain wasn't processing the German news correctly.
Apparently my brain was a few months early.

What the data show about Poland Spring's water withdrawals in Maine In response to the drought, the company reduced withdrawals between August and October. But overall, extractions increased in Fryeburg and Denmark this year compared to the past two.

And this is why you shouldn't buy Poland Springs water.

I had to take a break from reading This Way Up because I am laughing uproariously at @jayforeman.bsky.social and @markcooperjones.bsky.social making a sentence go one for 2 and a third pages.
There is some possibility my neighbours are concerned....

I love having to see what the US government has done now that merits the publisher of children's books releasing statements 🙄

Police hunt Louvre jewel thieves as questions swirl over museum’s security Thieves broke into the Louvre museum in Paris and stole thousands of diamonds and other precious jewels, prompting questions about the museum’s security.

I'm waiting for someone to blame Netflix's Lupin for the Louvre heist (article gifted)

Same guy who declared bankruptcy 6 times shut down the U.S. government 4 times in 5 years of being President. They wanted him to run the government like his businesses and that’s exactly what he’s doing.

Heads up to me everywhere: when a woman keeps rapidly saying "so" (or your linguistic equivalent) to everything you say, it means she wants you to shut up.
Brought to you by the very annoyed Russian woman walking past me who kept saying "так" to the man she was with.

Is there nowhere in the world that I can sit on the ground/a stone bench and NOT have a Russian woman tell me off?

There's a district in the Concord area of NH that's taking away school bus service from one of its elementary schools. It's going to be wild.

Are you mad/concerned about CBS cancelling The Late Show for seemingly political reasons? Are you mad/concerned about Congress pulling back funding for public broadcasting? Do you subscribe to Paramount+?
Why not take the money you use for Paramount+ and get PBS Passport instead?

I know I live in a tourism dependent area, but is it too much to ask for the tourists to recognize that people do in fact live in the area year round?
This is brought to you by questions like "why are there houses not by the lake" & "why does this farm have apple trees if they don't grow in summer"

One of the nicest things about yesterday’s No Kings march was how many people looked awkward and shy about being there. These were not perpetual activists and certainly not paid participants. They were introverted New England weirdos who felt like they HAD to say something

I have angered my cats. How? By finally getting rid of my recycling (aka their box kingdom). Please send happy thoughts to my cats

They're bred for the cold, to be high energy, dodge obstacles well, and yes pull a (light) sled. They aren't bred to pull 400 pounds for over 1000 miles without significant rest. Mushers use huskies because they're fast, not because they're bred for the level of endurance needed.
