Love this, Monte.

Proof of current granny hobby:
The one doing the work is doing the learning.
Luckily, I saw lots of learning happening in our sixth grade science room today. Or maybe that isn’t luck …

Student: Mrs. Budrow, do you play mahjong?
Me: Nope.
S: But you crochet?
Me: Yep.
S: And embroider?
Me: Yep.
S: And knit?
Me: Poorly, but yes.
S: So you do all the granny hobbies but don’t play the granny games?
Me: Correct.
Sixth graders are the best.
Welcome home, Artemis crew. Copy moon joy.

We are always teaching. They are always learning.

A child in a superhero cape and mask strikes a strong pose against a yellow background. The text reads, "The end game isn’t compliance; it’s self-directed learning."
💪 Compliance is not the ultimate goal of school. We don't only want students to be able to follow rules, we want them to make informed decisions, use their voice, and SHAPE the rules. #LeadInclusion #EduSky #UDL #EdLeaders #Educators #UDL #SBLchat #TG2Chat #ATAssessment
Livestream of the Artemis II mission.
Not me, watching the Artemis II mission in my cozy sixth grade science classroom and getting all teary.

Happy School Librarian Day! Thank you to all the librarians for providing such amazing services and spaces for kids!
Amazing.
Spent a little time this week reviewing the three ingredients that make up intrinsic motivation. Thinking about how this looks for students and how it looks for teachers.
Well, and isn’t is hard to change behavior when a kid is dysregulated? I know I can’t process much when I’m hot (or sad). So giving kids time to regulate feels essential if we want to try to change the behavior.
Pile of colored rubber duckies.
Support teachers.
For example, I’m supporting my own kid’s teachers by removing the squeakers from all the rubber duckies before he hands them out next week.
Wise words.
@mctownsley.bsky.social, this is why your work is so important!! And thank you for doing it!
The learning science initiative outlined in the article works because it doesn’t diminish that good work already happening. It adds to it. It’s teaching them, and then also giving them a common language. Slowly, building it over time.
We need more of that.
I understand your point, and absolutely agree that if you have to buy a package, you should run the experiment first.
However, the best things in schools aren’t purchased. They are home grown. They come from the teachers and the kids. The everyday things that are tested and working in real time.
My science mind wishes we could get districts to understand that a sales pitch isn’t science. They are selling something. That isn’t inherently bad, but that also doesn’t mean it’s good.
We can have consistency without conformity.
Everything about this is fantastic. The science of learning. The gently shift in practice not just another purchased program. The long time frame. Plus lots of amazing kids and teachers to see in the video. #EduSky
Two people sit facing each other in conversation, with text reading: “A real conversation with a student usually yields more valid data than a formal assessment.”
Data doesn't have to mean numbers or letters. All of the information we have is data. A conversation often yields your most valid data. #LeadInclusion #EduSky #UDL #InclusiveEd #EdLeaders
Some days, the classroom just works. Everyone is happy. Everyone is busy.
That was today. And it makes my teacher heart happy.
Jon, this is so good. Peer recognition and personalizing acknowledgment? Amazing.
Saving it. Thank you for sharing!
