Every map of Toronto is the same map of Toronto: an ongoing series.
(To be clear, this is not a criticism of the research, which literally notes that there is a correlation with socioeconomic status.) www.thestar.com/news/gta/pla...

Slug on a pot of white clover

Slug on a pot of white clover

๐Ÿ Herbivory (especially by vertebrates) was higher in rural environments, and pollinator visitation on plants that did not produce HCN was higher in urban environments, suggesting eco-evo feedbacks between plant traits and ecological communities

๐Ÿ™ Although we didn't see signatures of local adaptation, we did find that plants from urban and rural source populations differed in their life history traits: urban plants invested more in vegetative growth and rural plants produced more flowers and seeds

A field site with pots of white clover having survived the winter

โ˜˜ We find evidence of selection for HCN (hydrogen cyanide, an anti-herbivore defense) in rural environments, where HCN-producing plants produce more seeds and are more likely to survive over winter, but not in urban environments.

Effects of urbanization on local adaptation and eco-evolutionary feedbacks in white clover - Nature Ecology & Evolution Evidence of adaptation to the urban environment remains limited. Using reciprocal transplants of white clover in urban and rural environments, this study shows divergent selection on an antiherbivore ...

Part one of my common garden experiment is out today in Nature E&E!! We compare how urban and rural environments affect selection on HCN production, local adaptation, and eco-evo dynamics in white clover doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Yesterday was the last day of my 3-year long field experiment, and the last of my fieldwork for my PhD! I did some drawings and wrote a bit about my thoughts and feelings about it in the latest issue of the EEB Quarterly theeebquarterly.github.io

We started today with a wonderful talk on how cordyceps fungus generates zombie ants. Then on to modelling, egg laying timing & brood number, white clover in rural and urban environments, young active SINEs in Italian sparrow, TE content in ferns

Converting previous land-uses to parks *can* provide many benefits, but doesn't erase environmental injustice. New interdisciplinary work drawing from urban forestry, historical ecology, and environmental justice - really glad to see this one out! esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

4 12x18 inch posters on a brick and concrete wall. The top left is pink and says funding science saves lives, written in microbes, next to a microscope. The one on the right says Biology is bigger than binaries, with a fish, a lily, and a bee. The bottom left says Protecting wildlife starts wtih you, with a bunch of adiorable woodland creatues in yellow, white and black, including an owl, fungi, a... um. weasel? salamanders, butterflies, slugs, and a rotting log. The bottom right says Will our oceans thrive or nosedive the choice is yours, with the ocean represented in a circle, half of which is dead and half of which is alive, including kelp and a mackerel
