@coe.int states must act urgently to protect the Convention & the European Court of Human Rights and uphold their obligations under international human rights & refugee law.
Posts by Amnesty EU
For over 75 years, the Convention has guaranteed rights to free press, for LGBTI+ people, minorities, women, people with disabilities, the environment & more.
When migrants and refugees are scapegoated to weaken the powers of the European Court of Human Rights, this harms all of us.
Some European states seem set on weakening the reach of the European Convention.
They argue that protections for migrants should be rewritten for a new ‘era’ that regards the lives and dignity of some as less worthy than others.
Ministers from 46 @coe.int states meet in Chișinău this May to adopt a Political Declaration on the European Convention on Human Rights & migration.
@amnesty.org, @icjurists.bsky.social & @fidh-official.bsky.social warn about risks this poses to hard-won human rights & legal standards in Europe.
Pressure is mounting from all sides.
This week over 1 million voices called on @ec.europa.eu to suspend the agreement, amid growing tensions between the EU and Israel.
There is no time to lose, action is already long overdue.

As Israel’s biggest trading partner, the EU can play an important role in ending Israel's impunity for violations of international law.
However, EU inaction continues to this day, nearly a year after the EU confirmed its trade agreement should be suspended.
In June 2025, the EU found that Israel’s crimes under international law against Palestinians breached the agreement.
Since then, Israel has crossed every single EU red line.
Is the EU finally ready to listen?
21 April could be a decisive moment to finally suspend the EU Israel trade agreement.
Germany and Italy hold the key.
Tell Friedrich Merz and Giorgia Meloni to suspend the agreement NOW.

Finally, as donors, the EU and its member states must commit more funding to frontline NGOs aiding over 33 million people in need.
And redouble diplomatic efforts to protect civilians, including humanitarians, health workers & local responders.
Unless the flow of arms to Sudan is cut, civilians will continue to suffer daily bombardments.
As a matter of priority, the EU must engage with UAE to halt its arms transfers to the RSF immediately.
And work to extend the existing UN arms embargo from Darfur to all of Sudan.
The EU and its member states must urgently act to:
👉Protect civilians
👉Condemn violations by all warring parties, urging them to cease attacks against civilians
👉Champion justice & accountability
👉Support Sudanese civilians, rights defenders, civil society & journalists
Time for the EU to keep eyes on Sudan
➡️Act for human rights in this devastating conflict at today’s international conference in Berlin hosted by the EU, AU, Germany, France, UK, USA
➡️Keep Sudan high on EU foreign ministers’ agenda at the Foreign Affairs Council 21/04 & beyond
Today marks 3 years of Sudan's devastating war on civilians.
3 years of sustained assault, attacks, harassment, killings.
@amnesty.org and 5 other organizations urge the EU to act now to protect civilians and ensure accountability for violations. 🧵
Greece must immediately investigate these & all reports of pushbacks & end its cynical campaign targeting human rights defenders.
@ec.europa.eu should launch infringement proceedings against Greece for consistent & authoritative reports of violent pushbacks to Turkey.
Instead, Greece is prosecuting the very people at the forefront of reporting pushbacks, as in the case of Panayote Dimitras & Tommy Olsen, of Aegean Boat Report, who face serious criminal charges, not backed by evidence, for their human rights work.
Yet, despite years of mounting evidence and public condemnation, Greek authorities have yet to acknowledge this practice and ensure high level accountability.
@ec.europa.eu ignores calls to launch infringements against Greece for illegal practices.
In 2025, the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Greece in a case involving a pushback in the Evros region, finding that there were “strong indications” that this practice was “systemic” in this area of Greece at the time of the case.
The BBC report is the latest in a series of consistent, authoritative reports on the issue by @hrw.org,
Lighthouse Reports, the Greek National Commission for Human Rights, as well as by the UN and Committee for the Prevention of Torture. www.coe.int/ro/web/cpt/-...
Our report also found that in most cases, victims said that third country nationals in civilian clothing operated the boats used to transfer them across the river during pushback operations to Turkey.
Testimonies in our 2021 report describe unlawful return operations conducted by individuals appearing to belong to law enforcement with the frequent participation of individuals in civilian or unmarked clothing who appeared to be working with them. www.amnesty.org/en/documents...
@amnesty.org is appalled by this BBC reportage, including alarming video & photo evidence, on violent pushbacks in Greece & the reported recruitment of migrants as "mercenaries” by Greek officials to carry out these dangerous and illegal operations 🧵

The proposal to suspend the agreement has been on the table since July 2025, yet European leaders are stalling.
The gap between what the European public wants and its politicians actions is growing: eci.ec.europa.eu/055/public/#...
Suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, NOW!
@kajakallas.bsky.social the time for statements of concern is long gone. EU action is long overdue.
The EU and member states must uphold their principles and legal obligations in the face of this latest public display of cruelty, discrimination and utter contempt for human rights.
