Leaning on the quirky comedy doesn't mean that you can't make things cool as hell with this style. This scene uses the same cadence & manga-like aspects, with just enough oomph to the animation, for truly amazing cliffhanger

Struggled to describe Nippon Sangoku earlier, even as someone who has read multiple volumes of the manga. Landed on "LoGH meets Golden Kamuy", which implies a high bar I don't think it's ready to clear... but it sure is getting a stylish anime adaptation, so worth giving it a try!
This Lippmann-Dewey debate still frames democratic thinking today. Do we fix democracy by improving the expert infrastructure that informs the public? Or by improving the public's own capacity to participate? The answer, I'd argue, is both.
Walter Lippmann wrote Public Opinion in 1922. His core insight: the world is too complex for any of us to experience directly. We can't personally verify what's happening in government, the economy, or foreign affairs. So how do we form opinions about them?
Okay. An important moment for us, if you’ll indulge me with a repost. It’s time to start the very first whisper of noise about our next game.
It’s a mailing list! But it’s a mailing list that I’m hoping will be a bit different than what you’re used to.

My erosion filter is out! Video, blog post, and shader source.
It emulates erosion without simulation, so it's fast, GPU friendly, and trivial to generate in chunks.

The truly sad part is that half those tokens are used to say things like:
“You’re right to call me out.”
“I was wrong and I own that”
“You’re right, I provided incorrect information”
“Because of my failure you wasted 2 hours, that’s on me”
“You trusted my results, and I let you down”
Well well
Kémy Adé was shocked by the immigration refusal letter she received. In rejecting her permanent residence application, the Immigration Department cited her current job duties, which included wiring and assembling control circuits, building control and robot panels, programming and troubleshooting. The department said these duties didn’t match the Canadian work experience she claimed. Well, no, they didn’t. Adé is a post-doctoral research fellow and guest teacher at McMaster University — and those skills are not part of her repertoire. Nor are they what she submitted in her immigration application a year ago. “I saw this language about this job description that has nothing to do with me,” said the health scientist from France, who has a PhD from Sorbonne University in the immunology of aging. “I was disoriented how this could happen.” But a disclaimer at the bottom of the refusal letter might provide a hint. It’s believed to be the first time that the department explicitly referred to the use of generative AI to support application processing in immigration refusals. The disclaimer also noted that all generated content was verified by an officer and that generative AI was not used to make or recommend a decision.
Today in AI:
Canada rejected the PR application of a McMaster postdoc from the Sorbonne who works in the immunology of aging because the generative AI being used to process applications (😱) entirely hallucinated her credentials.
Everyone involved should be fired.

Zorah is composed of nearly 500 million triangles — but that doesn’t scare us 🙂
If asked to draw a person's portrait, many people would say “I cannot draw.” Why is observational drawing so hard? In a new paper, @judithfan.bsky.social and I answer: it's the limitations of human vision. Learning to draw is learning skills to overcome them.

I appreciate the viewpoint of a lot of people saying that fidelity doesn't really matter, people don't care about this stuff, art direction trumps poly count, etc. Sure. But you risk implicitly conceding to NVidia that DLSS5 makes lighting "more detailed" or "more accurate", and it *doesn't*.
DLSS 5 OFF // DLSS 5 ON
Its the environmental art equivalent of yassification, ibizafication.
the thing about tweaking lighting is you can almost always get people to say "yeah that's better" by making it brighter and higher contrast, and the thing about DLSS5 is it can't come in to work the next day, look back at the screen and go "ah no we've really fucked that"
The infamous failed restoration of a painting of Jesus by García Martínez and Giménez. On the left is a 1930 classical-style painting, with some wear and tear from age. On the right is what looks like a child's attempt at recreating the painting -- a failed restoration by an amateur artist.
Before DLSS --- After
They left this in the video, just imagine what they're leaving out lmao
The funniest part of the DLSS 5 demo is they had it running on two GPUs but say it'll work on one eventually. The point of DLSS is that it makes it so if you're broke you can run your game at 4k. They had an entire GPU just for the yassification lighting.
