Gabriel "Joy" Reid (they/she) is a writer, filmmaker, animator, and illustrator pursuing their M.F.A. in Visual Narrative at Boston University. They’re also the founder of Sunflower Workshop, a new independent media production, art education, and publishing company.

David F. Walker is an award-winning comic book writer, filmmaker, journalist, and educator. Walker is best known for "Big Jim and the White Boy" and the Eisner Award-winning "The Black Panther Party", the Eisner Award and Ringo-winning series "Bitter Root" , and the Eisner-nominated series "Naomi".
James III is a writer, producer, and actor. He Is the writer of the comic "Junior." His comic writing credits include the "Powerpuff Girls Supervillain Summer Spectacular", "DuckTales Valentine's Day Special 2026", and co-writing the recently launched Disney's "Stitch" comic series.

Meet Sherwin Long! An illustrator and freelance artist from Dorchester, he graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with an MFA in Illustration. Sherwin's unique work is inspired by hip-hop music, spirituality, architecture, mythology, and poetry.

A native New Yorker, Barbara Thomas now resides in Cambridge. Barbara and her husband, Timothy are creators of the award-winning Cambridge Chronicled series, a graphic memoir collection about racism and oppression experienced as a multiracial couple. We're happy to have her back with us this April!
Welcoming Ben Passmore to #BCICF2026! Ben is the author and illustrator of the comics Your Black Friend and Other Strangers (2018) and the Eisner Award-winning Sports Is Hell (2020). His latest graphic novel, Black Arms to Hold You Up, will be released in 2025 by Pantheon.

These grants are made possible by the generous contribution of CAMP sponsor and local Portland bookstore, Back Cove Books. Submissions for the S'mores Awards will be open from Monday, March 2nd to Sunday, March 29th at 11:59 PM EST. This is a juried, $300 mini-grant given to two artists who are primarily self-published to support the printing of a new mini comic. 2026 awardees will be announced at Comic Arts Maine Portland on Saturday, April 11th at 2:30PM.
