Thank you, David.
Very much hope you enjoy it
Book “Overnight” by Dan Richards. Aerial view of a small harbour at night, showing dark water and darker shoreline, with a curve of bright yellow lights. Above, a pink-purple sky.
Final newly arrived treasure is this, a book I hadn’t meant to get but that I stumbled across at Wallingford Bookshop while buying the preceding. It’s Overnight, by Dan Richards @danzep.bsky.social. Emotionally, I’m enthralled by the night, by those awake in the hours while the rest of us sleep.
Thanks Chris Power for this wonderful review of Overnight - now online and in this Sunday’s @theobserveruk.bsky.social print edition

Overnight by @danzep.bsky.social is a stimulating exploration of night and all it brings – the nocturnal world, insomnia, the creative potential of the dark hours and the work that happens while most of us sleep.
‘By the book’s end, night has grown to seem vibrant and companionable’ Observer

and Sarah Perry described the book as ‘both gripping & consoling, & full of an intelligent, querying tenderness for its subjects. I was never sure whether I'd be moved to laughter or tears: often, it was both, & in the end I was sad to leave Richards' humane and witty company…’ which is very lovely.
Thanks to @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social, @calflyn.bsky.social, Katherine May et al for their kind words about the book.
Samantha Harvey has said that Overnight felt choral to her: ‘all those different nocturnal voices singing at the same time, and the cumulative effect of it is powerful and moving’…
To celebrate the paperback, I’m doing some events - first in Margate on March 18th, then at @stanfordstravel.bsky.social in London (April 8th), Forum books Corbridge (April 9th) & Toppings Edinburgh (April 24th) with more dates to be announced.
Details can be found on my website - danrichards.uk
The paperback of Overnight is published this week on Thursday 12th. Thanks to everyone who supported the hardback. The updated edition has extra material and a beautiful new cover photograph taken on Skye by Nicholas J R White @nicholasjrwhite.bsky.social

'How fast are we going? Ten, 12 miles an hour? How amazing that must have been 200 years ago; as fast as a horse, but for miles and miles.'

A long time ago, in a hotel room far, far away…
Absolutely
Pilsdon Pen Looking out from the lower turf ramparts of Pilsdon Pen we sight a crescent moon of hills - a vein within a leaf spring - arcing to the coast. Somewhere in there lies our quarry; a lane diving into the dark. An inky eye, an ammonite. A hollow, foot-querned way. Turning away from the sea we begin to scale the hill. Over the stile, spiralling up between tussocks and gorse, stepping through the sudden cloud-line into thickly mantled murk. A lichen souper. Up until we clamber out on a floating island steppe - a layered mist rolling about our three glades in the fog. There is a trig: there, silent cattle; here, earthworks - mounds and humps. All elsewhere is milk. A void. We spread out to search our margins: Rob to the left, Stan to the right, me down the middle of the dim flat top. We do not orchestrate this trident sweep but each, finding himself alone, determines to carry on through the ether, round the worked ellipse, skirting the moat, to the point we'll surely converge.. on the edge of the fern-table brume. A fume quoit caught on this whittled marl peg.
Yeah this is one of those reads that’s quite lovely to read out loud
We’re recording the audiobook in the new year 👍
Quite right!
All best to you for Christmas and New Year & thanks again
Dan
Thank you!
