Haven't done one of these in a while, so a wee bump for this. New post coming on Saturday, about an IRA arms raid that turned into a disaster: the British Army knew that they were coming, the IRA knew that the British knew, yet the raid went ahead. "Balmoral, December 1921: the IRA enter a trap."

Thankx to THE BOSS for having Public Enemy perform at Springsteen Center American Music Honors ,, we should all always continue to FIGHT THE POWER
It's very funny to see the people that've been cynically flogging the urban rural divide for YEARS act all upset when it's talked about in any way other than "x change is an attack on rural Ireland"
This is extremely impressive from @unitetheunion.bsky.social.
#Unite are currently the only national trade union partner of #GeneralStrike100.

Dan O'Brien lamenting Ireland having well-paid jobs is very Dan O'Brien-coded.
Russia's Communist Party leader is warning Putin about the dangers of... revolution. "We cannot let another 1917 happen."
Congratulations to the Russian Communists on completing their ideological journey: from storming the Winter Palace to guarding it.

Might be a few issues with celebrating it now ...
in a world where Sinn Féin can't exhale without being accused of being anti-democratic ideologues conspiring to subvert the state, it is quite extraordinary to me that Noel Thomas is getting away so lightly with associating with actual anti-democratic ideologues conspiring to subvert the state
thread on Galway West by-election candidate Noel Thomas (II), who is brazenly lying about the extent of his involvement with the sovereign citizen group styling itself the Irish Republican Brotherhood
I find that people can't imagine that governments led by Cosgrave and then especially de Valera did this. Students look at me like I've two heads, because for them these men represent Mother & Baby Homes etc - the contradictions eh...
I really feel not enough people know about how much housing was built in a much much poorer country than Ireland now.
Sure you could develop your housing policies using evidence, examine the pros and cons, the potential environmental, infrastructural and social impact of such a decision, or…
You could ram through legislation for the beds in sheds program just because a billionaire funded “think tank” asked you too
"Kallas rejected criticism that the bloc’s approach to Israel suggested a double standard, a charge levelled by some EU insiders, while raising doubts about the impact of sanctions. “A suspension of the association agreement, will it stop the expansion [by Israeli settlers] on the West Bank? You know this is probably also not true.” From https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/apr/21/eu-foreign-ministers-reject-proposal-suspend-association-agreement-israel
A similar line from Kallas to the Biden administration's - "Israel is going to do this anyhow, our sanctions wouldn't make a difference".
Sanctions would absolutely make a difference: they'd empower those who are trying to stop the pogroms. By not taking steps you are empowering the Kahanist govt.
There’s a kind of guy who loves the idea that ordinary conservatives actually care about “fighting billionaires” and I think it’s laughable. They keep voting to make your life worse because their politics are that they don’t like you, not because they’re under the spell of a trickster political god.
The results of the 1926 NI census are online and were published in hard copy years ago. A big chunk of Mulcahy's papers captured in 1920 also supposedly went up in the Blitz
Seriously, Tucker Carlson is not a friend to the left. He might feel burned by Trump, but he knows his audience feels the same, and needs to keep them happy to sell them stuff. And he knows liberals praising his "apology" will tune in to hear more, and will be vulnerable to radicalization.
Ten years without Prince and his influence is still everywhere in Minneapolis.
You can hear it in the music coming out of our venues, see it in the art across our neighborhoods, and feel it in the way this city continues to create.
He helped define Minneapolis and that legacy isn’t going anywhere.
This might be Tucker Carlson’s most antisemitic tirade yet.
And hopefully it’s a reminder to everyone exactly who he is and why you don’t, under any circumstances, have to hand it to him.
Sorcha Eastwood with a Q for the PM "What was it about the twice disgraced paedophile adjacent self styled prince of darkness that you found so attractive to put into this job?"
Starmer is the frontman for a faction Mandelson was a key part of, he wanted the job, so he got it
Good thread by Runnymede Trust, a necessary and also thoughtful anti-racist response to recent anti-Jewish attacks in the UK:
Tucker Carlson chatted amiably on his hateshow with Charles Murray about The Bell Curve and told people to go read his pseudoscientific drivel about Black people having inferior brains so you'll forgive me if I don't rush to rehabilitate the guy.

No money for jobs. Plenty of money for spying.
Many of the 12 universities who paid private intelligence to spy on pro-Palestine activists are forcing through major job cuts.
@drjogrady.bsky.social it's "shameful", universities have "wasted hundreds of thousands spying on their own students"
This will be great!
Another shout for my piece on Joss Rowe who played for

The problem when I graduated was that there were 200 modern British history PhDs putting in applications for every job, you had to apply for like 50 jobs to get one, and a fair few people left academia before they did. That was unpleasant in its own way, but it wasn’t a death spiral like it is now.
