Stunted, twisted, and gnarled. As I drove through the Clear Creek area, I noticed a small ponderosa pine growing from the top of a pile of rocks. Stay tuned for additional views of this beautiful tree!

What a cloud! The storm that is moving toward this vineyard above Healdsburg was damp and wonderful. The wind nearly carried me away as I stepped atop my vehicle to get some height!

What a cloud! The storm approaching this vineyard above Healdsburg was magnificent and wet. As I stood atop my jeep to gain some height, the wind almost swept me off! #photography #blackandwhite #fineartphotography

A vineyard close to Healdsburg is accessible by a narrow route that climbs up the hillside. The massive oak trees, backed by a set of colorful skies, contrast with bare vines with grass growing between the rows.

A small lane winds up the hillside providing access to a vineyard near Healdsburg. Bare vines with grass growing between the rows contrasts with the mighty oak trees backed by a set of bright clouds. #photography #vineyard #blackandwhite

A storm passes across the vineyard. As I traveled into Sonoma, the weather was cold and the mountains were covered with snow. In anticipation of spring and the "bud break" when they green up, vineyards were barren!

Storm blows in over vineyard. There was snow on the mountains and a chill in the air as I drove around Sonoma. Vineyards were bare awaiting spring and the "bud break" when they green up! #sonoma #vineyards #photography

striations. I have no idea how the sand blew into such colorful layers before being converted to stone deep in the earth. It defies explanation!

The striations are mesmerizing. I can’t imagine how the sand formed such vivid, colorful layers before being transformed into stone deep within the earth. It’s truly beyond explanation! #landscape #SouthwestUS #photography

Plants in the cracks! A hard life growing on bare rock but somehow thriving here in the White Pocket.

Patterns. The symmetrical lines and stripes at the bottom of this fissure in the White Pocket display breathtaking designs that almost appear to be deliberately crafted. #landscape #SouthwestUS #photography

Moonrise. A celestial visitor entered the scene as I admired all the striations and contours of White Pocket. In moments the moon had moved totally out of frame! #landscape #SouthwestUS #photography

Ocean waves or just sand? Petrified dunes, which crystallized with temperature and pressure over eons of time, are now exposed due to erosion. Colorful curves and patterns flow toward the horizon.

The entrance to the amphitheater of sandstone known as the Wave is lovely in itself.

The beginning. The excitement is tangible as you enter the entrance to the Wave's amphitheater for the first time. You often have a tendency to rush through this spot in order to get to the "good stuff," yet in my view, this location outstanding. #SouthwestUS #Arizona #landscape #photography

Bill Theis here. Fine art photographer based in Cotati, CA. 50+ years of large format photography. The Earth's shadow appears as a deep blue band just above the horizon in this picture of Sonoma County. Lupines are in full flower with mountains stretching forever. #photography #landscape #fineart

To visit the "Wave," you take an orientation session after winning a permit lottery and carry enough water for the 7-mile round trip on an unmarked trail in extremely hot weather. This reel features panning through the photo and concludes with the full image. #photography #landscape #SouthwestUS

Nature’s bowling alley features hundreds of massive, almost perfectly round sandstone boulders scattered along the shore, complete with natural lanes and gutters. Almost perfectly round boulders called concretions have erroded from those distant cliffs to make this a natural wonder.

A gentle creek murmurs softly as it winds its way through towering redwoods. The forest floor, blanketed in vivid moss and lush ferns, forms a rich tapestry of green thriving in the cool, shaded air. Beware: crossing on the rocks can be slippery!
