I really appreciated this article by @drkevinrmcclure.com on faculty motivation and its connections to self-determination theory. It got me thinking about how to help faculty feel that their work is valued and meaningful. When traditional rewards are threatened, leaders need to support autonomy.
PHAB Lab is SUCH a great name!
Fantastic opportunity to do some binge eating research!
Happy to share this recent pub:
Non-white identities, lower income, & mistrust in research were associated with lower willingness to participate in genetic research. Increased transparency, community partnership, and equitable compensation may increase willingness

It ended up firing no one. A federal judge in San Francisco blocked the firing of 362 of the 954 HHS employees who did receive the October layoff

My reax to the big planned NIH shutdown firing news from @politico.com:
The Project 2025 ppl didn’t do big (illegal) NIH firings because they know there would be public outcry.

"In a response to requests for comment, an NIH press officer wrote, the 'NIH is committed to restoring the agency to its tradition of upholding gold-standard, evidence-based science.'"
"Without that grant [establishing clinical and translational research], 'we would not be able to identify what is still today the largest single way of reducing deaths from lung cancer.'"
"...highly cited studies that might not have existed if their grant had been cancelled include a seminal paper showcasing the results of the Human Microbiome Project2, the result of a $10-million package over five years to increase the understanding of the human microbiome."
"The algorithm found 1,287 grants — worth $1.9 billion — that it considered likely to be cancelled, of a total of around 48,000. Around 53,000 publications are related to those flagged grants."
A creative and insightful thought experiment (run by AI) -- what if similar grant cancellations happened in 2014? What current scientific advances would never have happened?
