Track 3:
“The Wire”
Haim
💿 DAYS ARE GONE (2013)
Recently submitted as my overall No. 2 single of the 2010s for #TheTenX5.
This is such sickening perfidy.
Ah yes, thank you! I think AI tried to give me this explanation as well, and I didn’t trust it because, well, AI. But sometimes it gets stuff right!
I think the 1975 poll burned me out on anything longer than 6.5 minutes, tbh.
I've been finding it pretty easy to make a decision in these head-to-head matches. This is the first one I've really struggled with. Germany's first 5 minutes is likeable enough. I know I should hear the rest, but I do my listening while washing dishes and it only takes so long. Does it go anywhere?
Yup, it won me over going through the playlist as well.
climate arson
Late to the show, but I'm here to say that Julien Baker's version of "Anthem Part Two" for the SAVE STEREOGUM covers collection gave me a new appreciation for Blink-182's songwriting. Still can't deal with Tom DeLonge's vocals. If anybody could make Jenny Lewis seem subtle and natural, it's DeLonge.
I meant to say "go with FAILER," but looking at the track lineup for BACK TO ME and ASKING FOR FLOWERS, I'm standing by the statement.

Track 2:
"One More Song the Radio Won't Like"
Kathleen Edwards
💿 FAILER (2002)
Those who are gonna include Kathleen Edwards in this #MusicChallenge (i.e. nobody) are probably go with Track 1 or Track 3. Not me, tho!
I saved (what I think is) Turkey’s strongest player for the match against Paraguay, and I think it was the right call.
Tough order to sum up an entire country's musical heritage in just three songs, much less one as diverse as the U.S., but this covers about 2/3 in a single song. Well played in the song selection game. Gotta respect it.
I've somehow been put in charge of the Turkish "team" in this World Cup-but-it's-music poll, and Gaye Su Akyol is up against a strong Aussie competitor here on Day 1 & could use your vote. If you're into surf guitar, I guarantee you'll like it (and discover a few other bangers along the way!) #PWC26
And by "captain" I mean "manager." Captain is something else, right?
If you, like me, find that lyrics help make a deeper connection to music, I've had little luck confirming what "Laziko" means (it could be the equivalent of "sweetie" or a line dance?), but it's generally a spurned-lover song & the first line translates as "How beautiful are the anchovies at home."
But how about that mashup of Turkish makamlar (I learned a new word!) with surf guitar! Huh

Some behind-the-scenes insight from the Turkish captain here.
While finalizing my order:
"OK, if I put Gaye on the first match I should be fine as long as the Aussie's save Thelma for later, otherwise it'll be real close."
When the matches were announced:
"Well, shit."
Obligated to ask if the bats were snuck in from Woodland, New Jersey.

I tried a couple different themes, and the most interesting one turned out to be all ladies. So ladies it is.
Track 1:
“Fugitive”
Indigo Girls
from SWAMP OPHELIA (1994)

Day 20: something hard to lift
“Thousand Dollar Car,” The Bottle Rockets

Day 19: found on a music store
“Loser,” Beck
“He hung himself with a guitar string…”
My observation as somebody from a U.S. border state is The Hip are absolutely *revered* in Canada and you have done the country proud by leading off with them 🫡
This is a dance off, if you see this repost a dance.

Day 18: a messy food
"Pocket Chicken," The California Honeydrops

Day 17: an appliance
"Heavy Covenant," The Hold Steady

I promised myself I wasn't going to repeat artists, but Craig Finn just packs his lyrics full of so many useful objects.
I might have voted Elbow if Track 4 turned out to be a cover, complete with the Muhammad Ali monologue.
Sadly, no.
Here I am trying to share novelty songs that nobody else is familiar with. I didn't count on the jelcore factor.
