Fabulous story, incredible pictures, and a conservation success: humpback whale supergroups forming off South Africa as their numbers come roaring back after serious depletion from 20th century whaling!

Sadly these Bluebells are full of Hybrid vigour.... @savebutterflies.bsky.social
Three large green orchid leaves rise up from the forest floor. From the center a tall thin green stem emerges with a bulbous, pink flower with darker pink lines crisscrossing it. Across the top are some browner petals in an orchid shape.

Did u know? Spring has arrived in the UK, but temps are still variable. When the days are chilly insects can't move their bodies,so they'll take shelter in warm, dry, safe roosts until the sun returns, just like these male Red Mason bees who have taken shelter in one of my empty bug boxes. 🌱🌿🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🐝🪰🦋
Do u use JohnsonAndJohnson #soap and #cleaning products? “Sustainable” #palmoil they use is far from “clean”. It’s linked to #deforestation 🦏🐘🦧, all for a dirty ingredient nobody even wants! ☠️🌴🪔⛔️.#BoycottPalmOil #Boycott4Wildlife @palmoildetect.bsky.social palmoildetectives.com/2021/02/09/j...
The last of my photos from Sinah Common, Hayling Island (for this trip anyway, I'll be going back!).
Thrift (Armeria maritima), Sea Campion (Silene uniflora), Yellow-rattle (Rhinanthus minor), Sea Sandwort (Honckenya peploides) and Springbeauty (Claytonia perfoliata).
Natural England hasn't protected a single new SSSI since 2023. Are they avoiding making decisions on sites where irreplaceable wildlife is in peril too – eg, Middlewick Ranges, Essex? Appreciate they're working with a nature-hostile government, so not easy. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A rare 6-foot bright orange nurse shark with white eyes was discovered and released off the coast of Costa Rica in August 2025, first documented sighting. The unique color is caused by a combination of two rare genetic conditions: xanthism (excessive yellow pigmentation) and partial albinism.
A wander in the local woods today turned up swarms of Green Longhorn - Adela reaumanella - over the sallows and a handful of Brown Hairstreak eggs that had hatched.
Holy. Shit. This is Reid Wiseman's video he took with his iPhone while at the moon 🌙

The biggest lie you were never told: “Sustainable” #RSPO #PalmOil stops #deforestation. It doesn’t! So avoid #snacks by #Mars #Kelloggs #Nestle all the big brands. Instead buy #PalmOilFree snack #food. 🌴🩸🤯🧐⛔️ @palmoildetect.bsky.social #BoycottPalmOil palmoildetectives.com/2021/02/11/p...
A Red Admiral butterfly basking on the ground. Its wings are dark brown with a band of orange running across them and a cluster of white spots at the tip of each forewing.
A carpet of Bluebells growing under an avenue of trees in the gardens at Tregothnan.
The gothic mansion and formal lawns of Tregothnan with the deer park ha-ha in the foreground.
Four Red Admirals at Tregothnan this afternoon - the first I have seen this year. I wonder if there has been an arrival of migrants.
Surprise catch when running my pond dipping course at Attenborough Nature Reserve yesterday a lamprey! This is a ammocete so the larval form and hard to tell but probably a brook lamprey. The gravel pits are connected to the Trent which is likely how it got in,
Low numbers of Peacock (dagpauwoog, A io) on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects this year, after last years poor summer generation and missing 2nd gen because of poor quality nettles. This spring is also dry and much too warm so far, so things don't look good for nettles and peacocks this year.
I don't know of a more beautiful & nature-friendly city to walk into in the UK than Salisbury - especially if you approach from across the Harnham water meadows and over the River Avon.
