A flatscreen display on a "smart" water fountain, demanding to be reconnected to the internet.
In 1999, I was playing a decker in Shadowrun, and tried to distract a guard by hacking a water fountain to overflow, and my GM said "why would a water fountain be on the network? That's fucking stupid. No you can't try."
Well it's 2026 and I just want you to know, Phil, that I FUCKING CALLED IT!

Karp’s book came out after @bentarnoff.com and I had already started writing ours. Reading it we were like “oh this is Muskism.” The interesting thing, as @lioneltrolling.bsky.social pointed out, is that it was written with the assumption of an incoming Harris administration.

Consider signing this open letter. We must fight against the auto-destruction of the university as an institution where skills essential to democracy are being learned and practiced: reading, interpreting, writing, formulating research questions that go beyond the normative rationality of LLMs

The rich, like the poor, depend on networks. That makes them local. It's the middle class, whose main sustenance comes from formal work, that doesn't and is thus mobile, atomized, and nuclear. Even people who do migrate mostly do so because there's an established migrant network around them.

The pied-à-terre tax will ruin New York's economy by (checks notes) encouraging superrich visitors to stay in hotels instead. I think these scare stories need a little more workshopping. www.ft.com/content/02ac...

OpenAI: We’re burning money like the Joker. A miracle needs to happen for us to turn a profit
Microsoft: Please please use our AI systems, we’re teetering on the edge here
Anthropic: I wonder what’ll kill us first: lawsuits, regulations or model collapse
Media and universities: AI is here to stay

its hard to be excited about "the ai bubble bursting" when the last 10 years has proven that regardless of automation, companies never rehire their terminated workforce. companies know they can burden one employee with the workload of seven while destabilizing the economy with a gig-based model.

Yeah, ready access includes not being under threat - and you have to sail quite a bit away from Vladivostok to reach warm water. Threat wasn't a constant, but once they developed the terrestrial reentry inertia takes over. (Especially now that Russia is sort of an inheritor civ.)

Because the Russians (and before them the soviets) don't have ready access to non deathly cold ocean water. They'd absolutely land their craft in the Caribbean if they could.
