None of it was instantaneous (though EMDR involved a series of emotional breakthroughs), but sometime in the past couple of years I started to realize that the chronic depression that had defined my emotional experience for my whole life isn’t coming back. Which I honestly didn’t think was possible

Thanks to therapy, the chronic depression I’d lived with as long as I could remember lifted at around age 40—for me, a lot of it had to do with learning how much of my depression had been maladaptive coping with the constant anxiety that I didn’t understand and thought was my fault

Running was a game changer for me being able to better live with the amount of general anxiety my body produces on its own. Therapy and EMDR helped me understand why my body learned to churn out anxiety all the time in the first place, so I’m not always emotionally chasing it trying to tamp it down

The two things I’ve done in my life that have had the biggest positive effects on my mental health are 1) in my early 30s, I started to run three miles basically every day, and 2) EMDR & therapy, started in my late 30s. (Things that didn’t really help included attaining multiple graduate degrees)

Every time I’ve seen this video over the past week, I watch it. I’ve followed Jordan Lucas on all platforms. More self-expression in all sports. Please and thank you ❤️
