A striking fact I learnt researching my book: For those in the bottom half, much of the real wage growth between 1979 and 2019 happened over just 7 "tight" years.
For top wages, full employment wasn't a big deal. For bottom wages, it was the nearly the whole game.

More broadly: Even huge protests rarely win regime change in democracies. Security forces see leaders, even if unpopular, as legitimately elected. Until they pivot, the regime stays.
The main predictor of protest success is size. Bigger is better.
"Disruptive" protests tend smaller, because most people fear violence or state repression and do not join.
(That's why the anti-ICE movement in Minnesota was world-historic: Absurdly high turnout DESPITE strong state repression.)
The pop history, bastardized version of Piven & Cloward 1977 -- "riots work, protests don't" -- has really damaged leftist thinking.
Piven & Cloward argued that movements must disrupt routine socio-economic life to win policy change.
