They are still looking for committed citizens who would like to join the initiative and help improve air quality in our area. Learn more about it here: bylab.nilu.no/urban-living...
In addition, citizens can also take part in workshops where they meet researchers and local authorities to discuss:
• Concerning air quality issues
• Decision-making based on data collected by citizens
• Other potential uses of the data

Wood burning is part of Norwegian tradition, but not all burning methods are equally sustainable or clean. This initiative also promotes more mindful stove use in the area.

Today, residents help to cover areas that are not monitored by the reference stations & contribute to the spatial and temporal resolution of air pollution models, assisting in particular to discern whether air pollution is higher in the area of Bærum than in Oslo during winter due to wood burning.

By installing low-cost air quality sensors outside their homes, once calibrated, they could provide acceptable PM2.5 measurements around them. And that’s how the Oslo-Bærum Bylab was born.
To figure out what was happening, the municipalities joined forces with NILU. Together, they came up with a brilliant idea: what if #citizens could help?
Along with traffic, wood burning is a main factors contributor to the presence of particulate matter in many European cities. Together they often create the perfect pollution cocktail during the winter months.
Stove burning wood.
Here's a fact: Wood burning is the second most common source of heating in Norway, only below electricity from hydropower.

Researchers and authorities noticed an odd pattern in the area between the municipalities of Oslo and Bærum, divided by the Lysakerelva river: #AirQuality models in Bærum showed higher air pollution levels than in Oslo during winter. 🤔⬇️

The reason is that “20 items per 100 metres” is the EU Beach Litter Threshold Value, established as part of the implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. A beach with fewer than 20 items per 100 metres of coastline is considered to have ‘Good Environmental Status’.
Last September, they launched a campaign in Lough Foyle (Inishowen) asking citizens to walk along 100 meters of coastline until they found 20 pieces of litter. Then, group them together and take a picture.
Every Autumn since 1987, our partners at @Coastwatch conduct a citizen survey to evaluate the health of Ireland's coastline following a scientific methodology.

Plastic bags, bottles, toys, cigarette butts, soft drink cans, rope, fishing nets.... It is estimated that more than 10 million tons of waste end up in the oceans and seas every year. And much of this rubbish accumulates in shorelines. 🏖️
Our partner #Coastwatch has been surveying the Irish coastline since 1987. This year, they wanted to try something new. They have asked their Coastwatchers to walk 100 meters through the beach until they found 20 pieces of litter and take a picture. Here’s why 🧵👇
