Book 29: The Dangerous Gift by Tui T. Sutherland. Wings of Fire #14. NOT a POV I expected to see, but it turned out quite well! I enjoyed catching up with other characters, and the MC's arc is strong. It suffers from this arc's flaw of not much happening, but that gives us more time for interiority.

Rice Boy is an amazing story for people who seriously think that they cannot be the main character. If you think that applies to you, why not give it a read?

Book 28: Dragonslayer by Tui T. Sutherland. Wings of Fire: Legends #2. This one's about humans! I appreciate that they get their own spinoff book instead of completely taking over the main series. It's a fun perspective in a world where the dragons are the central species.

Book 27: Mythspeaker by Christopher Roubique. A brilliant little middle grade fantasy based on Native American folktales. I love the worldbuilding (and the accurate nonbinary representation of being a weirdo in a bird mask) and really hope we get more.

Book 26: Knock Three Times by Cressida Cowell. The Wizards of Once #3. Did not expect to get genuinely invested in the relationship between these kids' parents! Cowell does a great job of exploring difficult, mature topics without losing focus of the fact that she's writing fun adventures for kids.

Book 25: Wild Blood by Kathryn Lasky. Horses of the Dawn #3. Came together better than I expected, though its blatant flaws stop me from calling it a great series. I guess that's true with all the Lasky series I've read.

Book 23: Star Rise by Kathryn Lasky. Horses of the Dawn #2. Always a shame when humans take over xenofiction. I like Tijo's storyline, but I don't like how it eclipses the pre-existing characters and themes.

Book 22: The Escape by Kathryn Lasky. Horses of the Dawn #1. Pretty solid horse xenofiction. I like the character dynamics and the mixture of historical and fantastical elements. Lasky's depictions of nonwhite people tend to be... iffy... but the strong grounding in history helps.

a greyscale sketch of a very big centipede floating in space. it is looking down at a space ship with a centrifugal ring; the ship is implied to be quite large and it is dwarfed by the centipede. the backdrop is black with a sparse scattering of distant stars

A blue winged red fox in mid flight, body dangling, paws flailing, and head turned with a happy open mouth expression. The background is dreamy purple and apricot clouds with a starry blue background. Growing constellation shapes float around the scene.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: young man in a hoodie looking morose and sitting on a swing set. He says “she’s breaking up with me…” Panel 2: next to him is a glyptodon, an early ancestor of armadillos. With his head in his hands, the young man says “what do I do glyptodon?” Panel 3: the glyptodon says “I’m like an early ancestor of armadillos. The young man angrily replies, “are you even listening man?”

Book 21: The Poison Jungle by Tui T. Sutherland. Wings of Fire #13. Aaaah, do I love these books. It's so nice to have a popular xenofiction series for kids with queer characters! And a well-written one, too! It gives me hope.

Book 19: The Hive Queen by Tui T. Sutherland. Wings of Fire #12. On a MG kick, I guess.
The best thing about these books is getting into each new character's head. You think you know them until they're the narrator, and suddenly, they expand! And they each have their own unique voice.
