The legendary #DukeNukem 3D doesn't need any introduction.
It took the FPS genre to the next level back in the day, and has seen countless mods over the years.
This new #mod by @postmemetic.bsky.social
introduced Ray-tracing to #Duke3D!

I'm confused here.
So the game will fluctuate between between all these framerates by default, and what the codes does is lock the framerate to 30 or 60fps?
How bold of you to assume that song wasn't already stuck in my head.
I feel we have sorta peaked in way when it comes to how much processor power we actually need for our games.
I mean, sure. We can always go higher so we can play 8K games at 240fps with full ray-tracing.
But everything beyond this point honestly just feel superluous
I have a feeling the PS2 was probably a LOT of people's first DVD player.
Hecc, even if you had no interest in gaming, the system was still cheaper than many stand-alone DVD players.
Was sorta the same deal with the PS3 and it's Blu-Ray drive.
HD-DVD really never stood a chance because of that.
I guess that makes some sense.
But are DVDs not basically as durable as CDs?
Wait. what is the default framerate of the game?
We took the great with the jank and got to experience technical innovation and creativity that we never dreamed was possible just a few years prior.
I don't really know what a new gen can even really offer consumers anymore that warrants an upgrade.
I actually had no idea the format stuck around for long enough to get some of those releases that are WELL into the age of cheap DVD players.
Wait... That was an option?!
All I want is just too get rid of those rounded corners of my windows T_T
Okay yeah, that is just absolute bonkers why you would hide what could be a game-selling feature for some behind a bloody cheat code?
First time I heard of the Sega Rally 2 one actually.
It's honestly kinda crazy just how many movie formate first for dominance back in the day.
Some kinda stuck around for most of the duration of the analogue age, but then there were stuff like CED, Video2000, HD-VHS etc.
After the jump from the 6th to 7th gen, the technological leaps just felt so lackluster and insignificant tbh.
The 5th gen was honestly one of the most interest, exactly because it represented that transition between the old and new
It's not something that is on by default, so you will have to enable smooth mode first.
I don't remember if it's there from the get-go or needs to be unlocked tho.
And yeah, but that's what made those gens so interesting.
Each system had its own characteristics and ports were never just 1 to 1
I don't believe I have every actually seen a VCD in person, now that I think about it.
The 2D pixelart games of the 5th gen are honestly some of the games that has aged the most gracefully.
They represented the peak of that style, while the 3D games mostly represented the infancy of that style.
I mean, I'm not a framerate snob or anything but in the case of Outrun, even if you can't perceive the difference visually, I could certainly feel it.
It really does feel kinda transformative to me. That's how big the impact was.
I'm glad they brought it back for the 3DS and Switch releases too
That's pretty cool!
I didn't even know that was something you could do.
I need to read up on that thing.
I only really know about it because of an old GameSack video where they brought it up
I've been meaning to get one for years. Just never gotten around to it.
The Action Replay was just a whole 'nother beast entirely on the Saturn. Basically a Swiss knife utility.
Where on most other systems it was mostly just considered a cheat device
You know, I just took a look over to my shelf and realized I did just this back in the day xD
It's something, but I hate that it lacks all the cover elements that spine logos and text.
It makes it stick out weirdly when places next to other games
The Saturn's timing was unfortunately.
While there was really nothing that could've stopped the hype of the 3D era, it's still a shame how much of an invasive species it was, basically forcing out 2D gaming as a hold for years cause it was "old-fashioned"
Would've loved to see more during that era
I remember the "smooth" mode of the Sega Saturn version of Outrun just made the game so infinitely more pleasant to look at, with that butter smooth 60fps
I would argue some of that system's games looks even better than a lot of the stuff you'd see on the Atari 7800
I should also really get myself an Action Replay for the Saturn.
That thing is pretty much mandatory if you want to get the full potential out of tbr system.
Didn't the Saturn also have a Japan-Exclusive MPEG-1 video card add-on that were used for some games over there?
I guess I must've gotten my information crossed then.
So the Saroo can work as a stand-alone flash cart where you can just dump and load your Saturn games from directly with no modding to the hardware required?
It's not that the MSX was inherently incapable of smooth scrolling.
There were just no native way to easily do it in hardware, meaning that a lot of resources had to go towards programming it in software, which was not easy, and most companies just went with the ugly tile-based scroll instead.
I don't even think I made it past the first level in Surgeon Simulator xD
These "Simulator" games can get really out there!
