THE WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS' ASSOCIATION
MUST SEND A FORTHRIGHT MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP
CONDEMNING HIS ATTACKS ON THE FIRST AMENDMENT
To the Officers, Board of Directors, and Members of the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA):
We, the undersigned, call upon the White House Correspondents' Association to use the occasion of the White House Correspondents' Dinner, to forcefully demonstrate opposition to President Trump's efforts to trample freedom of the press.
The dinner has long served as a symbol of the vital and irreplaceable role of a free press in American democracy and a celebration of the First Amendment and the journalists who uphold it. President Trump's systematic, sustained, and unprecedented attacks on the free press (detailed below) render his presence at such an event a profound contradiction of its purpose.
The collective weight of the administration's actions - retaliatory access bans, coercive regulatory investigations, frivolous lawsuits against the press, defunding of public broadcasting, dismantling of international broadcasting, physical restrictions on journalists, personal verbal attacks on reporters, assaults on the media in official White House press releases and social media posts, the arrest of journalists, and the pardoning of those who committed violence against the press — represent the most systematic and comprehensive assault on freedom of the press by a sitting American president.
There is a long tradition of presidents attending the White House Correspondents Association Dinner. But these are not normal times, and this cannot be business as usual with the press standing up to applaud the man who attacks them on a daily basis.

But these are not normal times, and this cannot be business as usual with the press standing up to applaud the man who attacks them on a daily basis.

We understand that some journalists plan to wear pocket handkerchiefs or lapel pins with the words of the First Amendment. And continuing in that spirit, we believe the White House Correspondents Association should take stronger action by issuing - from the podium - a forceful defense of freedom of the press and condemnation of those who threaten that freedom, followed by a standing toast to the First Amendment and a pledge to continue upholding such a critical cornerstone of our democracy. Speak forcefully, in front of the man who seeks to undermine our country's long tradition of an independent, strong, and free press.
We also urge the WHCA to reaffirm, without equivocation, that freedom of the press is not a partisan issue and that the Association will not normalize this behavior but instead fight back against any officeholder who has waged systematic war against the journalists whose work the dinner celebrates.

100s of journalists — Dan Rather, Sam Donaldson, Jackie Judd and others — have written to the WHCA asking to take a stand against Trump’s efforts to trample freedom of press.

ICE detained the wife of an active-duty U.S. Army Sgt. First Class after she showed up for an immigration appointment in 📍 El Paso—then still threatened removal despite legal protections.

Her husband (27 years active duty) said it plainly: ICE is out of control.

Before Karoline Leavitt became White House press secretary, she made a video for the radical Project 2025. Advising future right-wing political appointees, she said: “Sometimes you’re going to have to ‘fake it till you make it’ a little bit.”

But Leavitt is faking it more than a little bit.

Chavez-DeRemer stepping down as Labor secretary The scandal-ridden secretary is the latest member of President Donald Trump's Cabinet to exit.

Chavez-DeRemer, who has been under scrutiny since allegations of an extramarital affair with a member of her security detail, that she drank on the job and that top aides concocted official events to facilitate her personal travel, has resigned. www.politico.com/news/2026/04...

Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X
Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

I’ve seen the chaos inside the Trump admin firsthand—and how his extreme plans are hurting Virginia families. I stood up to him when it mattered & have not stopped fighting.

Today, I launched my campaign for Congress. I’ll fight to undo the harm to hardworking Americans. Share if you’re with me.

So Trump is pardoning the Proud Boys. A few here were sentenced to 22 years for seditious conspiracy.

I went to the DC jail and the night of the inauguration when he pardoned all the J6 “prisoners” it was the first thing he did, but these guys only got clemency.

Trump needs his loyalist army.

Right now, the conversation isn’t about nuclear programs, or free and fair elections in Iran. It's about reopening a body of water that was open before this war started. Chalk that up as a win for Tehran.

Melania’s press conference today looked rushed and very last minute. If that’s true, we should see some major story in the next 72 hours.

Just my two pennies.

Trump: "All U.S. Ships, Aircraft, and Military Personnel, with additional Ammunition, Weaponry, and anything else that is appropriate and necessary for the lethal prosecution and destruction of an already substantially degraded Enemy, will remain in place in, and around, Iran, until such time as the REAL AGREEMENT reached is fully complied with. If for any reason it is not, which is highly unlikely, then the 'Shootin’ Starts,' bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before. It was agreed, a long time ago, and despite all of the fake rhetoric to the contrary - NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS and, the Strait of Hormuz WILL BE OPEN & SAFE. In the meantime our great Military is Loading Up and Resting, looking forward, actually, to its next Conquest. AMERICA IS BACK!"
