I think my issue with the term is that it's so loaded (the first thing that came to my mind was blackface). So IMO there's a disconnect between the term and "there's nothing especially terrible about it" (maybe that's just a "me" problem, but I think I'm probably not alone)

But what's the line between minstrelsy and artistic influence? Is Peter Bernstein engaging in minstrelsy because his playing has a heavy debt to Wes Montgomery?

I don't know enough about Al Jolson to know whether or not he was considered racist by the standards of the time (I suppose it depends who you asked). But fair enough.

Any articles/books that explore this in more detail? I admit I don't know all that much about the history of minstrelsy but it's such a loaded term, and it doesn't seem quite accurate here.

Cultural appropriation is definitely a topic for discussion, but I wouldn't call it "minstrelsy".
