“The most important skills in AI aren’t math or coding.”

Evan Shieh of the Young Data Scientist League makes the case — and backs it up with students analyzing bias, presenting at international conferences, and owning their place in tech.

Testimonial: CSTA 2025 in Cleveland was truly everything I didn’t know I needed as an CS educator—and more! From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, connected, and seen. Those moments reminded me that educators are humans too—and we deserve joy, fun, and a break from the grind. It felt good to be in spaces where I could show up fully, laugh deeply, and still walk away inspired.
Data: Over 96% of attendees felt connected to community, inspired and energized, and believed attending was a good use of time.

Matt firmly believes that before teachers can help their students become ethical users of AI, they must first have a thorough understanding of AI tools themselves—which in turn requires robust training and ongoing support. As a CSTA IMPACT Fellow, Matt designed and presented a session for the national CSTA conference in which attendees learned about AI safety and privacy, shared practical strategies to integrate AI tools in the classroom, and maintained ongoing dialogue about ethics and equity in AI education.

For Karen, equity just doesn’t mean expanding access to CS, but expanding her students’ ideas about what CS entails. “When you frame computer science as a field that involves teamwork, problem-solving, creativity and communication, rather than just sitting in front of a screen coding all day,” she says, “it becomes more accessible and appealing to a broader range of students.” Reframing CS to include a focus on soft skills helps students from underrepresented groups see the field as something that could belong to them, rather than a subject that’s limited to students who are good at math or already enjoy coding.

“Engagement comes from letting students take ownership of their learning.” To that end, Jacqueline helps her students find the projects and platforms that best align with their interests, whether that’s designing a personal website, simulating a dice roll for tabletop gaming, or building a to-do list app to help them stay on top of their busy lives. [...] The true measure of her success is the students who continue to sign up for more CS work, or who return after graduation to tell her that they plan to continue in tech. “That’s when I know I’m making a lasting impact,” she says.

In Elexis’s experience, the best way to teach AI is to connect it to topics that students already understand. Elexis has seen this happen firsthand in her Healthy Bytes program, which introduces physical therapy and computer science concepts to middle and high school students. In one lesson, students used AI models to analyze nutritional labels and identify the amount of sugar in different foods. Many students had never even interacted with AI, but this lesson enabled them to instantly connect coding to the real health decisions their families were making every day.
