Night view of the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança in Guimarães, Northern Portugal. The medieval stone palace is dramatically illuminated by warm golden floodlights against a deep blue twilight sky with dramatic dark clouds. The imposing Gothic architecture features multiple towers, battlements, pointed rooftops and chimneys rising majestically above the surrounding landscape. A curved cobblestone pathway leads toward the palace entrance, flanked by manicured green lawns and small garden lamp posts casting soft warm light on the grass. Ancient stone walls surround the base of the palace grounds. Bare winter trees frame the left side of the composition, their dark silhouettes contrasting with the glowing amber stonework. The palace, also known as Paço dos Duques de Bragança, dates back to the 15th century and is one of the most important historical monuments in Portugal. Guimarães is known as the Cradle of Portugal, as it was here that the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, was born in 1110. This photograph was taken by the Câmara Municipal de Guimarães.
