3) This is one time where Forced Parameterization (www.brentozar.com/blitz/forced...) is *not* your friend.

If the value the query is filtered on is parameterized, the optimizer doesn't have the required info to choose the filtered index. (Anecdotally, this is better is newer editions.)

2) The table that you're putting the filtered index on cannot have been created with the session having "SET ANSI NULLS OFF;". If this is the case, you'll get an error.

Indeed, if a filtered index and "ANSI NULLS OFF" managed to make it into a plan together, the whole thing blows up.

Create Filtered Indexes - SQL Server A filtered index is an optimized disk-based rowstore nonclustered index especially suited to cover queries that select from a well-defined subset of data.

I love one of the more advanced indexing features in #SQLServer filtered indexes (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/re...). They take more care than your standard indexes.

1) Make sure that you include the fields of your filter in the index. Otherwise, your index (likely) won't get used.
