Screenshot of a data visualization titled “The Cost of American Exceptionalism,” subtitled “What would change if the U.S. matched the OECD average?” The page explains that each card shows how outcomes would change if the U.S. matched the average of 31 peer democracies. Below, a section labeled “Economy & Inequality” displays eight cards comparing U.S. figures to OECD averages. Highlights include: +$19K per household per year in redistributed income and +$96K in redistributed wealth if the top 1% matched OECD shares; a 71% lower CEO-to-worker pay ratio (from 354× to 101×); 50 million more workers with union coverage; 26 million more people with health insurance; $2.1 trillion saved annually in healthcare spending; $691 less per person per year in prescription drug costs; and intergenerational economic mobility being twice as high. Each card shows the U.S. value alongside the OECD average.

If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

I’ve often wished the two papers would share subscriptions; same for me in reverse. Article just says nobody living there complained about anything.

Yeah, I saw it one day, then went back the next and got it. Love it.

You could, perhaps, read the article and find out instead of tossing out assumptions.

Apparently people actually dying is a Bad Thing. Shame - I loved passing this sign at the top of 9990 at The Canyons and dropping into a huge empty bowl of powder.

Beautiful animal. Looks like it has less of an attitude, but on the other hand, you prolly have lizard-whisperer chops.

Do we have a functioning Congress anymore? Is there absolutely no action they can take besides interviews and tweets?

Lawyers wanna know where you went to school 40 years ago. Art curators wanna know what you've produced in the last year. Art isn't about production; it's about vision and work over time and living a creative life, and "what have you made in the last year" completely ignores that.

Get squirrelly as soon as you leave your driveway so you feel the conditions before you get out there on the roads. Happy new year, y’all. Travel safe, find patience, be kind.

I happily bounce between Maine and central California. Anywhere else should be warm, on the ocean, or have a great city. (Plus Vermont cuz family home, but not full-time.)

Just got chips and salsa, two freshly-made tacos, and a 16-ounce draft beer in a pleasant environment for less than the price of a small Big Mac meal. $9.99 - plus a $5 tip for awesomeness.
